Believe it or not, De La Salle High School ran a school newspaper in cooperation with Carondelet High School called the ‘Winton Oracle’ from 1968 to 1970. The club was discontinued in 1970 after no succession plan was put in place. Although, this year our Journalism staff have decided to revive it, 52 years later. Named after the street which joins De La Salle and Carondelet, the name was chosen from a ballot of 200 entries from students of both campuses. In an interview with a former editor of the paper and Alumnus, Robert Montgomery, the Winton Oracle was “a way to get students connected.” Through the Winton Oracle, Montgomery met his wife, Jan Becker. The two worked as co-editors on the paper. Former Journalism teacher from Carondelet, Gail Jara, and Al Huitric, former teacher from De La Salle High School, collaborated on this joint De La Salle-Carondelet journalism club hoping to create more unity across both schools. Montgomery mentioned that the paper provided a central source of school spirit and student involvement for both campuses. Montgomery mentioned the goal of the Winton Oracle was “to come up with articles about things that were going on.” Many articles were based on sports, academic, and department accomplishments relevant to both schools, in addition to, informational articles on global events and social issues at the time. The Winton Oracle’s first publication was issued on October 31st, 1968.
Its frontpage included an interview with congressman, Jerome Waldie, who expressed his views on the government and politics of the late 1960s. Waldie was a member of the United States House of Representatives and a Bay Area native who grew up in Antioch. In the article, Waldie is quoted saying, ”Revolution is not the solution to today’s problems.” In reference to his support for a peaceful method of social change and activism in response to the political and social situations facing the United States at the time.
