Winterton on Sea Bowls Club is a friendly outdoor bowling club situated on the playing field 200 yards from the church on the Somerton Road,at the edge of the village. There is plenty of parking and easy access. We have around 50 members, so big enough to be financially viable in these difficult times, but not too big to make you anonymous, and you will be warmly welcomed.
The green, one of the largest in the area, is sheltered from the wind on three sides by high hedges and the pavilion.
We play from as early in April as the weather permits until late September.
Membership is £35 per annum for an individual, £50 for a couple, with a rink fee of £2.50 per session using a token bought in advance.
Social (non bowling) members are very welcome to join us at the club. An annual fee of £20 is payableto contribute towards the costs of tea and coffee, cakes and biscuits, etc. These are provided on our organised bowling days (currently Thursday and Saturday afternoons) - effectively £1 a week for the summer season. We also have social gatherings on Tuesday afternoons through the winter months when we can't bowl. We have a snooker/pool table, darts board, and play various board and card games.
Visitors (not bought to the club via a current member) are very welcome. To play they will need to pre-arrange a day and time, and be signed in the guest book. The green fee for non members is currently £5. Please contact the club in good time via Email to arrange: wintertonbowls@gmail.com
We have (relatively!) organised Thursday and Saturday afternoon social roll up's when members meet up for a couple of games. Dress code is very informal, with most members wearing shorts when its warm enough, althoughflat bowls shoes are required at all times on the green.
Members can also bowl any afternoon after 12 p.m. - just make your own arrangements with other members.
If you have never bowled before, you are welcome to “come and try” on a roll up day, which are Thursday and Saturday afternoons. We have bowls available for you to use, and help provided if needed.
Winterton Bowls Club is like many others a self-help club. We rely entirely on members taking on different roles from administrative tasks to club maintenance. Administrative tasks are routine and run right through the year. The green has been improved tremendously over the past 4 years, due to significant expenditure and the incredibly hard work of the green-keeping team. Most maintenance is done by small core team of four or five, but, as with many clubs, a number of tasks like hedge trimmingand simple painting and buildings upkeep rely on a turnout of a larger group of members to help. Willing volunteers are welcomed with open arms!
We play home and away in the local Federation League on Tuesday evenings from early May until early August (see "League & Teams" at the top of this page for more details). When the league has finished in early August, "Roving Cot" games take it's place, with all games played at Winterton. These are hugely entertaining knock out games with plenty of banter. Up to 4 cots can be anywhere on the green at the same time. Furthest from the cot in each group playing loses a bowl before the next round of play.
We hold a number of internal competitions during the summer, and virtually all the club members participate in these. Updates regarding internal club competitions can be found at the top of this page, then "Club Competitions". If this heading does not appear on the banner at the top of this page, please select "More", and you will find it there.
