On rare occasions, you may be prompted to activate Windows Vista on a computer that did not previously require Windows Vista activation or was already activated successfully. For example, this may occur on a computer where Windows Vista was preinstalled by an OEM or Volume Licensing installation and major hardware changes have occurred, such as upgrading the hard disk and memory at the same time.

If you are prompted to reactivate Windows Vista, you can do so by using the Windows Activation Wizard:

I have an older laptop that came with Vista Ultimate when I got it. I've reinstalled several times and never had to activate. Used the cd on one of my PC's and it wont activate, but it also wont stop me from using it.... because really, using vista is punishment enough! :)

Windows XP was the first Windows operating system to require activation. According to an official 2007 document on the Microsoft's support website, "After the 30 days has expired, you must activate Windows to continue using Windows." An oft-quoted article written by the late Microsoft developer Alex Nichol to clear up myths about Windows XP activation says that an unactivated system will do little more than boot, allow you to make backups and activate.

Windows Vista's penalty for failure to activate is much harsher that of Windows XP. After a grace period of 30 days, Vista enters "Reduced Functionality Mode" or RFM. Under RFM, you can't play any Windows games. You will also lose access to premium features such as Aero Glass, ReadyBoost or and BitLocker. Finally, an unactivated Vista will automatically log you out of the system after only one hour of use until you successfully activate it.

Windows Vista will ship with anti-piracy technology that will lock down the OS if it has not been activated within 30 days of first use, Microsoft announced today. If the OS is not activated, Windows will switch to a reduced functionality mode that will cripple the OS. This is but one of many planned features of Microsoft's new Software Protection Platform (SPP), shared by both Windows Vista and the forthcoming Longhorn Server, due sometime late next year (at the earliest).

Microsoft provides a command-line program in Vista known as the Software Licensing Manager (SLMGR) or slmgr.vbs.This is a Visual Basic script that resides in c:\windows\system32. You can read the contents of this script file with any text editor or a professional development environment.

I reported in a Feb. 1 article that the upgrade version of Windows Vista allows itself to be clean-installed to a new hard drive. The new Microsoft operating system completely omits any checking for a qualifying previous version of Windows. This allows the upgrade version of Vista to successfully upgrade over a nonactivated, trial version of itself.

But dishonest PC sellers could use the procedure to install thousands of copies of Vista and sell them to unsuspecting consumers or businesses as legitimately activated copies. This would certainly violate the Vista EULA, but consumers might not realize this until the PCs they bought started demanding activation ? and failing ? months or years later.

When installation is completed, the system will start a 30-day grace period in which the computer will run and be fully functional without activation (although it will display pop-ups reminding the user to activate). At the end of this period, Windows would enter Reduced Functionality Mode (except if successfully activated). In Reduced Functionality Mode, Windows would present non-closable windows every hour, on the hour, complaining that the computer has not been activated. Access to other features may also be blocked. (Windows also enters Reduced Functionality Mode following an attempted activation if the product key used during Windows installation did not match the edition installed, or if the product key was already activated on another computer.)

There is a fully supported technique that resets the grace counter on an unactivated copy of windows to a full 30 days. This can be successfully performed up to three times. To do this, the user would open an elevated (Administrator) command prompt and run the command slmgr.vbs -rearm, and then reboot. This program can also be used to activate Windows from the command line (slmgr.vbs -ato), change the product key used on an existing installation (slmgr.vbs -ipk), and various other functions.

When installing a retail copy of Windows or Office, the user is asked to input a unique product key supplied on a certificate of authenticity included with the program, which is later verified during activation.[1] Immediate activation is not required following installation, but the program must be activated within a specific period of time in order to continue to function properly. Throughout this grace period, the user will be periodically reminded to activate the program, with warnings becoming more frequent over time.[5]

Certain versions of Windows and Office are available under a volume license, where a single product key is used for multiple installations. Programs purchased under this license must still be activated, with the exception of Windows XP and all versions of Office released prior to Office 2010.[6][7][8][9] Businesses using this licensing system have the option of using Microsoft's activation servers or creating and managing their own.[10]

If Windows is pre-installed on a computer by an original equipment manufacturer (OEM), the operating system is automatically activated without the need for interaction from the user.[11] In this case, the copy of Windows installed does not use the product key listed on the certificate of authenticity, but rather a master product key issued to OEMs called a System Locked Pre-installation (SLP) key. On each boot, Windows confirms the presence of specific information stored in the BIOS by the manufacturer, ensuring the activation only remains valid on that computer, even if the product key is used on another machine.[6]

*All Office 2016+ and Microsoft 365 (formerly Office 365) licenses are associated with an email account. A personal licence is re-activated on a new machine by logging in to office.com and selecting which of their machines to associate.[32]

Others defend Microsoft's use of product activation. The Harrison Group, a market research firm, conducted a study sponsored by Microsoft in 2011 illustrating that computers running activated versions of Windows software were on average 50% faster than their pirated counterparts. The group concluded by stating that users of genuine Microsoft products ultimately receive superior performance while counterfeit users are susceptible to security issues and lost productivity.[37] Fully Licensed GmbH, a developer of digital rights management technology, while criticizing Microsoft for being vague about the nature of information sent from a given computer during activation, nevertheless concluded that activation is not particularly intrusive and does not significantly violate privacy.[38]

For permanent installation and continued use, your license requires you to activate your Manifold license. Activation requires fetching an Activation Key that matches the serial number. This may be done through the web in a fast and easy manner. Once a Manifold license is activated it will be permanently installed on one computer system and will run without time limit on that computer.

For 30 days after a serial number has been issued, that serial number can be used to enable launch of Manifold on as many machines as you or whoever has the serial number wants. This initial 30 day period allows users to resolve any difficulties with software or hardware configuration on the machine they decide to use for the license. There are no limits at all: the software runs with all features enabled and no limitations. After 30 days, the Manifold installation can be activated to enable Manifold to run forever on that machine.

If a Manifold installation is not activated within 30 days of the serial number being issued, Manifold will no longer launch on that machine. The serial number will still identify a Manifold license, but after 30 days it can only launch Manifold if activation is also done.

When the initial 30 day period expires, Manifold will not launch unless it has been activated. Because activations are a limited resource, the purpose of the preliminary 30 day installation period is to allow users to try out different hardware configurations before they decide which computer system will be their first choice for the Manifold license.

When entering a serial number or activating via the Activation dialog you must have Administrator privileges. When an Administrator enters a serial number or Activation key into the Activation dialog, Manifold will be activated for all users on that machine. To make sure you have Administrator privileges login as "Administrator." Don't assume your login has full Administrator privileges.

Once your Manifold System license has been activated on a particular computer, you may uninstall Manifold System using the Windows Control Panel - Add/Remove Programs applet and then later re-install your Manifold System license on that same machine without requiring any new activation. The computer system will "remember" that your Manifold System license has been activated. For example, if you installed Manifold System from the original release first issued you could uninstall that original release and then download and install an update for that same version without needing to activate again.

He then launches Manifold on his notebook computer and realizes that his notebook does not have a web connection. If his notebook computer had an Internet connection he could have activated his license over the web. Instead, John will have to do a manual activation.

After a few weeks he decides it is time to get activated, but he does not "trust" web-based activation and decides to manually get an Activation key from the Manifold activation web site. When the Activation dialog pops up he copies the serial number from the dialog and attempts to get an Activation key on the web site. This does not work because Henry has copied the masked version of the serial number from the dialog, which has X characters substituted at the end. He is not using the original serial number sent to him by email. Henry, of course, has not read this topic so he thinks it is just fine to copy the masked version of the serial number from the Activation dialog. be457b7860
