EDIT: case has been opened, and CDFTrace has been collected for the server the user is able to log in to, and for the server she cannot use. For each attempt to connect to the non-working server, a new "Connected" session is left running (after Receiver popped up and quickly disappeared). Waiting on Citrix now to analyze the logs.

Case with Citrix is still on-going. They are having me collect more logs without rebooting the servers. Several users are affected by this issue, and it pains me not to be able to reboot the servers (which would clear any logs Citrix could gather).

The symptom that is most alarming is that those stuck sessions prevent users from logging on to those servers. They can log on to other servers -- just not the ones where they have a stuck session with.

Later the server was stuck on restart screen. I know For Windows Update, if the size of the updates was large, the operating system needs more time to reconfigure the changes. We have only installed one KB.

If the server was stuck on the restart screen for more than 30 minutes after installing a cumulative update, it could indicate a problem with the update itself or with the installation process. The first step would be to check the Windows Event logs for any error messages or warnings related to the update or the restart process.

I recently did some updates to a Server 2016 box which acts as a Hyper-V Hypervisor. After performing the updates the server was hanging at "Shutting down service: Hyper-V Virtual Machine Management". It was in this state for quite a while so I gave the server a little nudge by restarting it (I know - I'm an idiot).

When the machine came back up it was hanging at the Windows symbol with the spinner. I restarted again and ran into several issues (such as the OS not booting at all). I removed a disk that was (software) mirroring the boot drive from my RAID array, and now the machine is showing some signs of life. It booted and did some "Working on updates" things, but now it is stuck at "Shutting down service: Hyper-V Virtual Machine Management" again.

I have found that I see this issue on new, or quite new server builds. Something happens with some Windows updates that come down while the system is young, then this situation arises. I have seen this on Server 2008, 2012 and now 2016 (would be nice to have a 'fix' Microsoft, or at least a better message 'Shutting down Virtual Machine Management, please do not turn off your computer, this could take an extended amount of time'.

After about an hour of waiting and no reaction whatsoever i tried pinging all the VMs running on the stuck HyperV. Eventually one DID answer the ping (damn them Exchange-Servers...). I tried to shut the VM in question down forcefully with "shutdown /i" (CMD) which just resulted in a "permission denied" message (could have to do with the reason the HyperV had issues putting it to hypernation/pause).I then tried to connect me to the server via RDP which worked like a charm. I manually shut the server down within it's own gui and just a few minutes later the HyperV was successfully rebooted. Only had to restart the trolling VM in HyperV and everything was alife and kickin' again.

I installed windows server 2012 R2 on a server with IIS, SQL, TFS and some other Microsoft products. After finished installation, I ran windows update which asked for restart to continue installation.

It worked for me too. My server was hanging after restart at 7%.F8 command promptand thenwmic logicaldisk get nameand thendism.exe /image:D:\ /cleanup-image /revertpendingactionsas in my case the image in question was "D:".

I have been recently upgrading all of my VMWare ESX 4.0 servers to ESXi 5.1.0, everyhitng has een going really smooth. Until one of my Guest when I tried to boot it up, it just hangs on the 'Applying Computer Settings' This Guest is a Windows Server 2008 R2 with TMG 2010 installed, and as you can imagion I really need to get this up asap. I can boot in Safe Mode without Networking fine but where do I go from there? If I try and boot into Safe Mode with Networking, I can login but it hangs on the 'Welcome' section and will not go any further??

Well get this, before I did the above I checked the Hardware Spec on the Guest VM and it read 5 CPU's ?? I;ve never given any of my Guest servers 5 CPU's!!?? I changed it to 4 CPU's and it loaded. It did say that I was using an illegal copy of Windows Server 2008 R2 I put my key back in and activated it.

Try safe mode without networking and try a chkdsk with repair, and also try a windows repair if you can, do you have an install disk to run that from? Also have you tried last know good configuration at boot?

I've read about this one also with Server 2008, but TCP/IP 6 isn't disabled on my 2008 R2 box, they're all ticked on all the cards. All fixed now but really weird why it's just this particular server.

ran msconfig, disabled all Microsoft services, reboot, gets the server as far as the logon screen, (instead of the applying computer settings) enter my credentials (local or domain), and it stays stuck at the eternal blue screen Welcome circle.

I recently had a similar issue occur after using the vmware converter to move an exchange 2010 server from an older vmware esxi system to a newer esxi 5.5 system. Though the conversion went through without a problem, starting up the server afterward had this issue show up. Although I was having a horrible time getting it to boot with anything I was trying, I did eventually discover that what my actual problem was, is that it was caused by the new vmxnet network adapter not being setup in the exchange services for DNS external/DNS internal lookup. If this is the situation with anyone else that comes across this post, once you do finally get started up and into windows, go to exchange management console, server configuration, hub transport and verify that it has the correct DNS settings entered in external DNS, but I think the more important part that was causing my issues were the internal DNS lookups. I would suggest either setting it to use specific DNS servers, or make sure that the NIC that is selected in the use network card DNS settings is the correct/new NIC. After that, it seemed that the problem with applying computer settings hanging didn't occur any longer. There were some other issues other than this one, but after this issue was corrected, those were fairly uncomplicated to get resolved again.

I am a mac girl, working on connecting with knife-windows trough Opscode's managed Chef to my Rackspace Windows servers. (I know, it sounds exotic, but these Windows servers are a customer requirment).

I've experienced the problem where Windows 10 machines seem to be stuck on checking for updates, etc. when using the Settings | Updates & Security and selecting Check for updates.

I'm guessing the issue is related to checking for updates during the Active Hours period and the GUI option "Check for updates" not allowing it to move forward with whatever it's stuck doing.

Note: Attempting to run the Interactive mode if WU is configured to be solely non-Interactive, or on a non-Interactive server, shouldtrigger an error (something along the lines of "AU Can not performnon-interactive scan if AU is interactive-only").

We got into Sophos program Intercept X 2 months back and this was the last set.The support checked and turned on tamper protection for us and asked me to restart the server after business hours to get in sync with the cloud.

I did that and nothing happened ,so I called in ,for next two days and 10 hours ,the support engineers kept trying different WIndows hack instead of Sophos hack to uninstall this stuck Sophos agent ,and ofcourse they are not Windows admin and werent able to.The asked me for the safe mode option, but thats not an option as we use private cloud and use SAAS(Software as Service),they wont do anything software related at the back end.

I will try to give a somewhat chronological approach to get your server running again. I do experience this issue from time to time, but thankfully it is pretty rare. That makes it a bit harder to troubleshoot though.

Warning: this post contains last-ditch attempts and other dangerous stuff that could destroy your server. Use at your own risk. If you do not understand how to perform the procedures listed below, you should not attempt them on your own. Especially not in production.

Some updates may take a very long time to complete. More so if the server is an underpowered VM. Thus, it is worth letting it roll overnight just in case it is really slow. Another trick is to send a Ctrl+Alt+Del to the server. Sometimes that will cancel the stuck update, allowing the boot sequence to continue.

Hardware errors can cause all kinds of issues during the update process. If you are experiencing this issue on a physical server, check any relevant ILO/IDRAC/IMM/BMC logs, and visit the server to check for warning lights. A quick memory test would also be good, as memory failures are one of the most prevalent physical causes of such problems.

I attached minidumps taken of fsdmhost.exe and server health ETLs to the bug on Feedback Hub, however, I was unable to attach the full dumps as they seem to be too big (but available on request!). All the event logs Application/System/Deduplication-Operational/Diagnostic, say everything is fine.

Hello all,

I wanted to upgrade my instance from Windows Server 2012 R2 to Windows Server 2016 and the upgrade process is now complete, but the system is stuck in License Terms view, which I can see via the EC2 instance screenshot.

The server is not available via RDP connection which it was under Windows Server 2012 R2. e24fc04721
