The following detection identifies Microsoft Winword.exe spawning Windows Script Host - cscript.exe or wscript.exe. Typically, this is not common behavior and not default with Winword.exe. Winword.exe will generally be found in the following path C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\root\Office16 (version will vary). cscript.exe or wscript.exe default location is c:\windows\system32\ or c:windows\syswow64`. cscript.exe or wscript.exe spawning from Winword.exe is common for a spearphishing attachment and is actively used. Albeit, the command-line executed will most likely be obfuscated and captured via another detection. During triage, review parallel processes and identify any files that may have been written. Review the reputation of the remote destination and block accordingly.

Windows still allows batch files, but batch files don't allow any control over the Windows shell and Windows environment. By introducing the Windows Scripting Host, Microsoft has introduced a script and COM based engine that can access the Windows Shell, the computer's environment and network settings using simple VBScript or JScript code. In addition you can even access any COM component, including your own. This column will introduce you to the basics of how the scripting host works and how you can incorporate its features into your Visual FoxPro Applications.

The Windows Scripting Host is a language independent scripting engine. Scripting languages such as VBScript and JScript can be used to drive many processes. The same language that is used in client-side scripts in Internet Explorer (IE) or server-side scripts in Internet Information Server (IIS) can now be hosted by the Windows Operating System itself.

But, in the face of adversity, did the Scripting Guys give up? Well, as a matter of fact we did. The Windows Script Host has a second host front-end application called CScript (CScript.exe), which enables you to run scripts from the command line. In its simplest form, you launch CScript and use the name of the script file (and its path, if required) as a parameter, as in this example:

In the last two sections, you saw that the WScript and CScript hosts have a number of parameters you can specify when you execute a script. It's also possible to set some of these options by using the properties associated with each script file. To see these properties, right-click a script file and then click Properties. Wscript.exe and cscript.exe provide the interface between a script source and a registered script engine (i.e., interpreter).The wscript.exe and cscript.exe hosts are language independent. You can write scripts in any language that is registered with WSH. When you double-click a filename with a .js, .vbs, or other registered extension, wscript.exe (the default execution host) executes the script by passing it to one of the registered script engines. WSH selects the appropriate script engine based on the script extension. This information is written to the HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT Registry hive during the script engine registration process. You can change the default execution host to cscript.exe, or you can specify the desired host via the Run dialog box or the command line at the time you invoke your script. For example, from the command line you can enter

Wscript.exe and cscript.exe also provide several runtime options, including an interactive or batch-mode switch and a maximum number of seconds that a script can run. Both hosts support interactive and batch modes. But cscript.exe's interactive mode uses a command-line interface and wscript.exe's interactive mode uses simple graphical dialog boxes; using either host in batch mode is easy.

Clicking the embedded flash movies in rhino help leads to a script error under windows 10 (see attached picture, sorry for German error message).

Clicking to run the script, leads to the download of Adobe flash updater and to another error message telling me that Microsoft edge already contains the latest flash version.

This happens every time a movie in a help page is played for the first time.

Going to another page, then returning to a page where movies have already been played and replaying movies will initiate the whole thing again.
