DOSBox can also emulate three other graphics cards (among others) which can be used with Windows 3.x. To use those you need to change the machine setting in dosbox.conf.

Now to install the S3 graphics driver, start DOSBox again, type

cd windows

setup

You get a screen similar to the initial setup of Windows 3.x. Scroll up to the Display driver and hit enter. Now scroll all the way down to "Other (requires disk....)" and hit enter again. Enter the path to the S3 drivers "c:\drivers\s3" and hit enter.

One game (Microsoft Fury) gave me problems with timed enabled. If you have calibrating problems, change this again.

Also take not that most games require you to calibrate the joystick again, after a Windows 3.x restart.

But beware! Windows 3.x doesn't like it when you change drivers too often and then Setup crashes when you want to load other video drivers. - When you choose the Tseng drivers when you install Windows, the mouse pointer might not be visible. For most uses a boot image is not worth the hassle, though. One of my registered shareware games (Inner Space) only installs as registered version on a boot image, so if all else fails a boot image install might be the last resort.

I successfully change my driver, however when I type win to launch windows at the end it says it cannot find a device file that may be needed to windows, and to check the path line in my autoexec.bat file

Windows 95 sorta-kinda works on DOSBox. I went through the motions several times before I got it to work, but the main issue is that DOSBox doesn't really work out-of-the-box with Win95. I was going to say run as a VM but it has already been said a few times. You have to actually run DOS, the command line is not DOS. Just cause it quacks and walks like a duck doesnt mean its a duck. The CLI in any modern windows is just that, a CLI to whatever OS is running. to run true DOS you need a vm.

In Windows 7+ lpr is not enabled by default. You need to add the feature under printing in add/remove features. If you run 64 bit, you have to copy and paste lpr.exe from Windows\system32 to windows\SysWow64 to get it to run correctly when you have enabled it.

For this reason, Gentoo users who want to run Windows 98 in a DOS emulator arerecommended to use a DOSBox fork instead. Personally, I have been usingDOSBox-X on Gentoo to run Windows 98 for a while, and stability has beenimpressive. There is not an official DOSBox-X package for Gentoo yet, which iswhy I have created and been maintaining ebuilds for DOSBox-X myself. EDIT 2: So, would it be possible to turn the dos tag into dos-systems via a tag-synonym, so that we may move on to retagging the command-line/batch-file questions to windows-console? (There is no need for the tag [windows-command-line], as suggested in my previous edit; [windows-console] will do.) The final step would be "burn and blacklist" the misleading DOS tag.
