There is a lot to be said in favour of streaming music services, but even if you use one there's a good chance that you have a collection of music files on your hard drive as well. Like a digital photo collection, a digital music library is something that grows and evolves over the years, and there is organisation well as consumption to consider.

It is with this in mind that we've approached sharing this roundup of the best free music players around. We know that enjoying music on your computer is not only about listening, but also keeping things organised.

Here you will find free players to suit all manner of needs. Whether you're in the process of growing a small music collection, or you already have a huge library of tracks, these are the best apps you can used to take your ears on a musical adventure, and also keep your collection manageable, organised and in good shape. check our our guide to the best free YouTube to MP3 converters.

MusicBee is a free music player created for serious music lovers and includes everything you need to manage and enjoy your collection, no matter how large (it's reportedly handled a library of over 500,000 tracks without a hiccup).

This free music player is designed to make the most of your PC's hardware, including top-end soundcards and surround-sound setups, with upmixing for stereo sound. Continuous playback eliminates silences between tracks (ideal for Pink Floyd fans), and you can choose to add silences or fades, normalize volume, and experiment with the equalizer.

The free music player supports almost every audio format around and converting files is simplicity itself, with presets for different playback devices (though for MP3 encoding you'll need to download the LAME codec).

If all of that isn't enough, there's even an Android app for controlling MusicBee remotely, and support for WinAmp plugins. You won't find a more comprehensive free music player, and although it's not open source, it's completely free to use and tinker with for personal use.

AIMP supports a huge number of formats, and additional encoders are available as user-created add-ons. Most music player extensions are extra visualizations and skins that, although cool, have little practical use. By contrast, AIMP's plugins include some real gems. Some of the highlights are a YouTube extension that lets you build playlists from multiple videos, an add-on for streaming music from SoundCloud, and an extension for controlling the player remotely.

MediaMonkey plays and organizes both music and video, and unlike some dual-purpose media players, it does an excellent job of both. It identifies tracks with missing metadata and searches for the information online, and like MusicBee, its superb tagging tool lets you tag files using industry-standard formats.

MediaMonkey arranges your music library in a logical hierarchy, and its File Monitor ensures everything is kept up to date as you add, edit and remove files. It works well, but if you want full manual control you'll need a third-party plugin.

This free music player will look up metadata for untagged tracks when you rip an audio CD, and can identify and erase duplicated tracks. foobar2000's library doesn't update in real time, but it can detect changes and remove dead links.

VLC is lightweight and works happily on all versions of Windows from XP onwards. Versions for Mac, Linux, Android and iOS are also available. If you're looking for a single app to handle both music and video then it's hard to beat, but for music alone, the dedicated tools above will serve you better.

I've looked, but so far only been able to achieve playback on Windows with HTPC-ish software like XBMC, and on an android cellphone (several players for that there, all worked fine).

Upgrade it to VLC media player 2.0.1 Twoflower. UPnP was added back into the Windows build as of V2. If you still like your V1.1 for some reason you can always parallel install V2 in a different folder. Open the Playlist menu. On the left side, click on Local Network and Universal Plug'n'Play should be an item, click on it and wait from a few seconds up to 30 seconds or so to list all the media servers on your lan. Click on your media server's icon and work with its media listings. It may take a while for it to populate a large collection's listings. You can build playlists from there.

Other solutions have different problems:- WMP gets to be listed, but won't decode many contents, and won't support audio- MediaMonkey can be tweaked to load as a rendere player, with just an icon in the system tray shown; but the memory usage is not as light, and it seems to hang when control point starts reproduction of remote streming contnts (icecast, udps etc)

iTunes is the ultimate solution for me. With its Home Sharing feature, I can view and listen to my library on any computer running iTunes or iPhone. Sometimes I even stream my music to my AirPort Express with AirTunes. (I'm a Mac guy, but this all works on my Windows PCs too)

With iTunes for Windows 10, you can manage your entire media collection in one place. Subscribe to Apple Music to access millions of songs. Buy music and movies from the iTunes Store. And sync content from your computer to your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch.

I read that there was a player, but can't seem to find it anywhere. I downloaded emby for wmc, but i'm not sharing a server with anyone. I also tried to install the server (is it nessessary?) and i got an error. I'm not, at least at this point, intrested in apps, just want a better option for my home entertainment unit (pc w/wide screen) and offline music collection.

You do need the server installed, after that you can use a web browser or install clients like the Apps or Theater or WMC client, etc. Once you get the server installed you can then add your music location to it and proceed from there.

I do not think there is a place to see comments for music albums, artists or tracks.. that seems like a strange place to put your info like Album, Artist (Track Artist), Disc #, Album Artist, etc. If you have all that in only the comment field then that would be the problem. At least that's my guess. What Emby "wants" to do is to find your .mp3's correctly tagged with info/art etc.

But the key thing is having those mp3 tags to make scraping so much easier. -- And if you need to re-scrape all of your music, the easiest way is to remove the path in the config then re-add it and let Emby update, at least that's what worked well for me.

Having said all that, i am only interested in displaying the comments tag, not lyrics, etc (at least at this point). On another note, i use poweramp as a music player on my android device. It does what i want beautifully, displays any desired tags info with a single click. What i want is much simpler on my home system, to be able to search, play, display artwork and read interesting band facts offline on my widescreen screen using a remote. I can do all this with wmc....except read the comments tag. That's why i'm here giving emby a try, simply in an effort to get the metadata to display. Most everything i've read tells me it is possible, even the screenshots on the emby web site show displayed metadata (for movies), if it's possible to read a synopsis/review for a movie, why not for a music album? i must be missing something....

Since I had the correct tags on my music files, all of the above was populated automatically by Emby. I didn't need to do anything extra in this case. This is from the web client, so depending on how you consume your media, YMMV. I primarily consume media on my XB1 by using its web browser to select stuff and then DNLA to play it.

It looks like you have exactly the right file structure, so much of your library will probably be picked up automatically. In some cases, the artist isn't found without a little help but most of those fall into two categories: either they don't have entries in the various music DBs or there are a couple of bands with similar names.

Please be aware that Emby does not currently work well with large music libraries. The Web client is reasonably quick in opening music views but the WMC client can take 10s to 30s or so to open a view in particular the Artist or Album artist views. Depends on what theme you will use. I find the default theme to be the best. The Android client is currently lacking as it times out on the above views for a large collection. Thus it is very difficult to navigate to a particular album. As you will be using WMC I would recommend splitting your library into manageable chunks to enhance performance until the Dev team sort these problems.

So to begin with I'm not really sure where to find music content type (i'm using the WMC plug-in - offline). Under the settings 'gear' i have "General', "View Options" , Theme Options", etc, no music. Likewise i see no Metadata Manager as well. Seems with me we'll need to start from the very beginning, as assuming i know anything is giving me too much credit!

I am sorry for my simplicity. Media Server or direct folder share playback? I am using it just as before on my older pc. Just added the device to my home WIFI network ( actually just connected it to the socket) and I saw the WDMyCloud on my computer. I saw it as well on my WMP, so simply clicked in WMP on WDMyCloud and I saw there all my music, which WMP can see there. And there is unfotunatly just a fraction of the music as it is there in fact.

To name a few, you can create a well-organized media library from your local collection, curate playlists, get extensive audio format support, sync data with smartphones, and see visualizations while using this robust audio player for PC. Winamp also comes with a built-in web browser so you can browse your favorite website without going anywhere if needed. ff782bc1db
