Scored a Pentium 4 Extreme Edition 3.73ghz SL7Z4 processor. Would like to make a build around this chip but I don't really have anything to go with it yet. What should I be looking for in a motherboard? Any recommendations for video cards? Looking to use this for classic games 2006ish or older, probably a dual XP / Win98. One of my kids and I like RTS games. Looking at youtube most people obsess over what they can try in 2018 or 2019 and showcasing what later stuff looks like running on an extreme P4. I just want to have an awesome period piece to use the best of that era and older. I have faster stuff to play newer games already. Looking forward to the conversation!

We're honestly not sure how all but the most extreme (and the wealthiest) of users could actually make use of all those lanes. You have to try hard to come up with scenarios that max out 64 or even "just" 44 lanes. But if you have your reasons, you may want to go the AMD route. Just know that Threadripper motherboards (which run on the new X399 chipset, specific to Threadripper) are expensive, even as enthusiast boards go, starting at $340 when we wrote this. Core X-Series motherboards (running the X299 chipset) started at a comparatively modest $210.

Any way you slice it, a PC built around this Extreme Edition chip is going to come at an extreme price. That's fine, in some sense, because that's always been the case for Intel's Extreme Edition offerings, although Intel has increased the price with the number of cores. Extreme Edition chips (like the eight-core Core i7-5960X Extreme Edition from two generations ago) used to cost around $1,000. In 2016, the 10-core Core i7-6950X Extreme Edition jumped up to about $1,700, and now that we're at 18 cores, it's $2,000 to play.

Music encoding doesn't exactly push a modern CPU to its limits, and certainly not extreme slices of silicon like these. But this is precisely the kind of test that shows Intel's chips to their best advantage. Intel's recent Skylake and Kaby Lake architectures do better than AMD's Zen on single-threaded or lightly threaded tasks. That said, unless you're hanging on to some very old programs, most software that can take good advantage of multiple cores and threads has been updated to do so at this point. (And it would be bonkers to buy an Extreme Edition or Threadripper CPU and limit it to this kind of stuff.)

Using Intel's Extreme Tuning Utility (XTU), we were initially surprised at our ability to push the Core i9-7980XE Extreme Edition way up from its fairly low stock clock of 2.6GHz, to well above 4GHz. The system never once locked up, and our benchmarks ran steady. We noticed, though, that core temps were getting extremely warm very quickly, up to and above 100 degrees C.

Step down to 1080p (that's 1,920x1,080 pixels), though, and things are much different. The Ryzen 7 1800X performed the worst overall at that resolution, on both games. But none of the high-end, high-core-count parts came close to matching the mainstream Core i7-7700K on Far Cry Primal. The Ryzen Threadripper 1950X was 8 frames per second (fps) behind the top-end Core i9 here. But both were pushing triple-digit frame rates, for extremely smooth gaming.

Admittedly, if our test chips are any indication, the Core i9-7980XE Extreme Edition has more overclocking headroom than the Ryzen Threadripper chips, and so could be pushed to significantly higher levels of performance. But you'll likely need some pricey, exotic cooling to keep your cores chilled while running at high speeds for long periods. At anything above 4GHz, our triple-fan liquid cooler struggled to keep the Extreme Editions cores out of the red zone. And of course, extreme cooling is going to add even more to the Extreme Edition's overall system price. Not to mention: All but expert overclockers should be plenty wary of pushing their $2,000 processors past their out-of-the-box specifications.

The choice of installing windows 8 is not bad. It definitely owns unique features and interactive design along with fast boot, improved functionality, and upgraded features. The next generation OS of Windows 8 is a friendly choice that is definitely pleasing to eyes. It surely brings the desktop to life because Microsoft has revolutionized the Windows look with the metro style interface. The latest edition of Windows 8 has been built on the same style.

Lost Planet takes place in the year known in the game as T.C. -80, 80 years before the trial century, on the planet of E.D.N. III. After the Earth's conditions become too hostile for humans due to war, global warming and pollution, an interstellar megacorporation named Neo-Venus Construction (NEVEC) plans to colonize E.D.N. III, a new Earth-like planet in the grip of a brutal ice age. NEVEC discovers that E.D.N. III is inhabited by an aggressive and territorial insectoid alien species named the Akrid, which come in all shapes and sizes and generate their own precious thermal energy. 150 years after a great war was fought in which the humans lost to the Akrid, civilian colonists and E.D.N. III military personnel continue to seek out a nomadic existence as "snow pirates", harvesting T-ENG from fallen Akrid. The plot of the game revolves around Wayne Holden, a soldier who attempts to overthrow NEVEC, who still vie for control over E.D.N. III, and help colonization efforts for the remainder of the human race by destroying the Akrid, all the while attempting to survive both betrayals and the extreme conditions of the planet.

At the top of the range, offering over a teraflop of performance, is Intel's first consumer desktop CPU with 18 cores and 36 threads, the Core i9-7980XE, which will go on sale later this year for $1,999. Intel describes the i9 Extreme Edition as "by far the most extreme desktop processor ever introduced". But the new X-Series is larger than a single chip - there's a range of options to suit various budgets, delivering different levels of performance.

Memory performance lines up just as you'd expect which is behind that of our dual channel based setups which have always ran extremely efficiently. More so than the quad channel ones which you'd think would be the better option. We actually did an article late last year looking at the setups slightly more in-depth.
