• Individual hairs are banded black and red in varying degrees and intensities, with black focused along the topline and red around the neck, belly, and legs, creating a look like a typical wolf or coyote.

• Usually has a gray-black body and tail, red legs and muzzle, and cream/white countershaded undersides.

• Some cases can have extensive red mixed with the black

• White phases can be so pale there is only a little black around the topline

• In black phases the usual color gradient is instead shades of black/gray

• Underbelly, eyebrows, and jaw are always a lighter shade than the top of the coat

• Black skin.

• In hooved creatures: Tail is black or banded red and black. Mane may be red, black, or banded red and black
