The northeast of this tropical country has become the global Mecca for kitesurfing from November to January each year. The small fishing village of Preá is 12 km upwind from the popular resort of Jericoacoara. The kite spot itself begins at the eastern end of the village and is located directly on the open Atlantic. There is no offshore reef, stones, or dangerous objects, so no space problems whatsoever on the long, fine sand beach. There is also plenty of room for everyone on the waterfront. A trip to the 6 km east flat water spot in Barrinha Beach is recommended and can be combined very well with an easy kitesurf downwind back to Preá. This route is also suitable for downwind beginners.

The spot offers wind side-on-shore toward the right, and not only an extremely high wind probability of continuous 20-25 knots throughout the day but often a few knots more wind than other kite spots in the region. On some mornings it can happen that the wind blows weakly from the south and thus offshore. But from 11 am at the latest, it then turns into the main wind direction and remains reliably side-on-shore for the rest of the day. From the afternoon on, the wind reaches a strength of a little more than six Beaufort on a normal day.

From November to January, the average temperature ranges around 30°C, reaching peaks of 32°C during the day and cooling to 28°C at night. The constant presence of wind brings a slight drop in the perceived temperature, creating a pleasant atmosphere throughout the day. Sunlight dominates the skies, and rainfall is very rare during this time of the year. The water temperature is delightful, averaging around 29 degrees. You can leave your neoprene suit at home and instead pack only lycra to protect yourself from UV rays.

The transfer from Pinto Martins International Airport in Fortaleza takes about 4 hours by 4x4 pickup truck and the distance is 285 km. Most of the route leads along the well-developed and asphalted main road CE-085. Only the last 13 km are on a side road to Preá. There is also the Jericoacoara National Airport which is less than 20 km from Preá, but it’s only an option in case you arrive from abroad at the International Airports of São Paulo or Rio de Janeiro and take a connecting flight.
Important: to enter Brazil you need a passport valid for at least six months. European tourists can stay in Brazil for 90 days, without the need for a visa.
