Wheeler intrigues Emily; he is quiet and asks personal questions without being demanding or rude. After dinner, they attend a street carnival; Emily leaves after a masked man who looks like Wheeler tries seducing her. The next morning, Emily wakes to find Wheeler watching her. He gives her a bouquet of orchids and denies making advances to her the previous evening. As an apology, he offers to show her the city. They attend a party with a married couple they noticed in the restaurant. Navy sailors at the party make advances on the wife; Wheeler fights them and he, Emily, and the couple leave in his limousine. The married couple is having problems because of the wife's infidelity. She wants to reconcile with her husband. Wheeler encourages the couple to have sex in the limo. Emily finds their actions disturbing. Emily and Wheeler visit the hotel that her firm wants to buy, and she tells Wheeler that she fears he would disappear if she touched him. When Emily hugs Wheeler, he pulls away, telling her he does not like being touched.

Another orchid that looks like a Pokemon, albeit a more stately classier one than Pikachu is Platanthera clorantha, the Greater Butterfly Orchid. Flowers like ethereal alien-angels. Looking at it, face-to-flower is a sacred thing, a vision of a better time that could have been and will be in the future.

One of my favourite native orchids for its pyramidal point of strong purple buds as it starts to open is Anacamptis pyramidalis (above). The colour is among our most vibrant wild flowers. Fairly common, this orchid is often found creating good colonies in open grassy meadows.

Rarer and less showy is Ophrys insectifera, the fly orchid. As you can tell by its botanical name it is closely related to Ophrys apifera, the bee orchid. Both, along with other closely related orchids, evolved to trick insects to copulate with them thus helping pollination to happen (the bee orchid has since evolved to pollinate itself). Food or sex, I guess insects are getting a good deal from most flowers.

One of the most commonly seen orchids and no less special because of it is Dactylorhiza fuchsii, the Common Spotted Orchid. Ranging from white with pink spots to shades of pink, I first saw these growing along footpaths all around Southern England. Little spikes among grassy areas, often accompanied by stunning views beyond.

Spiralling both clockwise and anticlockwise, the spike itself has downy hairs giving it a silver appearance that glows among grass. Each little flower is a fully formed orchid flower complete with lip and markings, though these are too small to properly see by eye. It also has an unusual and memorable fragrance.

All the more reasons then to support conservation work locally and abroad to not only protect land they grow on, but to start expanding it by restoring ruined ground to its wild state again for plants, insects and animals to continue to grow and evolve. With our helping hands, we can restore Utopia for our own good as well as for wildlife.

Julia, this video was a great pleasure. It brought back so many memories of all the hours I spent outside finding interesting plants and sketching. You even covered how blinding the sunlight can be on white paper, the temperature fluctuation and the need for finding shade, the insects you may have to contend with, finding a comfortable position to sketch when there is no chair available, and how cramped your body can get after a long sitting time. I remember all of it and then some. On some of my pages there are even raindrops which spread the color when there was a drizzle, which I just left alone as a memory of the day, and I often included sketches of any insect that happened to land on my paper. Now at age 81 my wanderings are more restricted, mostly to where I have easy access via car and I bring a chair, and no more climbing to get a better look at flowers on an incline. It was a treat to see that the younger generation, like you, are still outside with a pencil, paper and watercolors. I have about 50 or so sketchbooks of those memories on a shelf now, and every sketch brings back each lovely day.. Thank you so much for this. It was a pleasure to be with you on a day of wild orchid fever.

Great walking with you, Julia, very interesting. Learning about that rare orchid is amazing, such a gift. Can you share the name again? Love the ravens, we have them here at the farm, also. What is the temperature these days for you?

At this time of year many people are thinking about planting my wild flower bulbs for the early spring however I thought it is worth mentioning that our wild Orchids are not dissimilar in their development, forming an underground tuber or rhizome first, before putting up a flower spike. My selection of wild Orchid seed can be sown at any time as the start of their development all happens beneath the ground, not reliant on sunlight at this stage, they are one of the few plants whose seed can be sown straight onto the soil surface among the grass of a lawn or field (I have written the instructions on the seed packet); they do not require bare ground prior to seeding which is required for the wild flower seed mixes.

Joining Strako to dedicate the stamps were Georgia Tasker, author, horticulture writer and Pulitzer Prize finalist; Susan Wedegaertner, president, American Orchid Society; photographer James A. Fowler; and Lawrence Zettler, director of the orchid recovery program, Illinois College.

The Wild Orchids stamps will also be issued in coils of 3,000 and 10,000.

There are more than 30,000 species of wild orchids in the world. Many that are native to North America are endangered or threatened, making sightings in their natural environment increasingly rare.

These striking flowers are native to damp woodlands, and numerous organizations across the country are working to preserve orchid habitats. Orchids also thrive in cultivated gardens or as houseplants.

La Bougainvillea is a magical place. The staff are very attentive and accommodating. Shout outs to Karell, Katherine and J. This trip was a family of 8 celebration/ vacation. Wild Orchid's set up is perfect w/3 bedrooms, each with its own bathroom. We also rented the cottage behind the house. The beach is indeed pink and desolate. Rarely saw anyone else on the beach. Breath taking sunrise and sunsets. Minutes away from Governors Harbor, restaurants, convenient to anywhere you want to go. We all enjoyed ourselves immensely in spite of issues we encountered. Wifi is spotty, Water pressure and water temperature are a problem. our expectations for a luxury rental may be high, but sometimes no water comes out of faucets/showers, sometimes scalding hot, or freezing. Not sure if its just wild orchid, or if this is a resort wide issue. Upon our arrival there were some broken cabinet doors, a fan that didn't work over the kitchen island, one bedroom had no TV as advertised, one tv didn't work. Eventually things were resolved. Even with inconveniences, this is a desirable rental house! Highly recommend Eleuthera Outdoor Center for snorkeling excursions.

We would all visit La Bougainvillea again!

Once we spotted that orchid we saw four others blooming in the near vicinity, with additional Fairy Slipper Orchid plants that were not in spike (we could tell from the single leaf growing out of the ground). All were located in cool, shaded areas. 006ab0faaa
