Course Objective: History through media is designed to help students develop an informed and critical understanding of mass media through the analysis of its history, examining, interpreting, and evaluating sources of information, and creating their own content.
Units of Study:
Unit 1- Media literacy- What is the media and how to determine fact from fiction. Giving credit where credit is due. Which sources are reputable, and which are not. Media Bias- Understanding what the media shows and why. (POV) How does the media affect us and our lives. Determining bias, misinformation, and spin.
Unit 2- video and media creation 101
Unit 3- Political Media
Unit 4- Freedom of Speech/Press (Freedom of speech, court cases that expand or limit rights of speech)
Unit 5- Mass Media; Its history and impact: (Television, music & radio, film, books & magazines, advertising, and the internet.)
Projects and Activities
Throughout the course, students will be creating a variety of media projects including but not limited to;
Weekly news broadcast of school events and major world events *students are in charge of interviewing, covering various events, and researching stories.

Students may take the course “History Through Media 2” as an elective. Students who take the class for year 2 or 3 will have more responsibility and seniority on the broadcasts, social media, and website. Year 2 and 3 students must complete 1 investigative magazine style story per quarter.
