Well, the very first part of the two-part movie has reached over $730 million worldwide. Directed by Jon M. Chu, this musical fantasy brings the first act of the famous Broadway show to the big screen.
It delves into the backstory of Elphaba, the future Wicked Witch of the West, and her complex relationship with Glinda, the Good Witch. Made with a $150 million budget, it has become one of the top blockbusters of the year, with a sequel set to release in 2025 itself.
A crucial report report Luiz Fernando states that Wicked has claimed the #1 spot for its second weekend, surpassing the Friday earnings of Doraemon’s 44th installment and the live-action A Girl and Her Guard Dog.
For reference, A Girl and Her Guard Dog is a new live-action film that debuted in theaters this Friday. The film brought in an estimated $525K on its second Friday, reflecting a 42.5% decrease from its opening Friday revenue.
As a result, the musical fantasy Wicked has reached a total of $6.2 million in Japan. It is on track to soon surpass the $6.7 million earnings of Dune: Part One, which starred Timothée Chalamet, at the Japanese box office, according to data from Box Office Mojo.
The report also noted that A Girl along with her Guard Dog is a live-action film adapted from a popular manga and anime. It grossed approximately $425K on its opening day, securing the #2 spot.
Meanwhile, Doraemon: Nobita’s Art World Tales earned $360K on its second Friday, marking a 31% drop from the prior week, and has reached a total of $6.1 million in Japan.
Wicked has grossed $473.23 million at the US box office and $261.88 million internationally. Its total worldwide earnings have now reached $735.11 million, placing it as the 5th highest-grossing film of the previous year. The movie premiered in Japan on March 7.
