Emily Threinen is an Associate Professor of Music and Director of Bands at the University of Minnesota School of Music in the Twin Cities. In this role, she conducts the acclaimed University Wind Ensemble, leads the graduate wind band conducting program, and provides administrative leadership for the UMN Band Program.
Before returning to Minnesota, Threinen served as Director of Bands and Artistic Director of Winds and Brass at Temple University’s Boyer College of Music and Dance in Philadelphia. She has also held conducting and teaching positions at Shenandoah Conservatory, Duke University, Concordia University–Ann Arbor, the Dodworth Saxhorn Band, and Harding High School in St. Paul, where she was recognized with the Outstanding Teacher Award.
An active conductor, clinician, and advocate for music education, Threinen has appeared across the United States and abroad, including South Korea, Singapore, Costa Rica, Australia, Spain, Brazil, and Canada. She regularly collaborates with composers and performing artists, contributes to leading professional publications such as the Teaching Music Through Performance in Band series, and is a Yamaha Master Educator. Her professional memberships include the American Bandmasters Association, World Association for Symphonic Bands and Ensembles, College Band Directors National Association, and the National Band Association. A Minnesota native and alumna of the University of Minnesota, she is proud to live and work in her home state.
