After winning the ’04 Olympic games, Povetkin signed a contract to fight for Sauerland Events. According to the contract Povetkin would train mainly in his native Russia and fight primarily out of Germany. Under the supervision of Sauerland promotions Povetkin made his professional debut on 11 June 2005 by defeating the German Muhammad Ali Durmaz.
