WhyTab Privacy Policy
Last updated: October 21, 2026
Everything stays on your device. WhyTab has no servers, no accounts and no analytics. It makes no network requests and sends your data nowhere.
This page explains exactly what the extension saves in your browser.
What WhyTab stores
Tab manager
To remind, park and restore your tabs, WhyTab saves each tab's title and URL, the intent you chose (such as "Read soon"), its timer, and your scroll position. It also keeps a yes or no flag that records whether you typed into a form on the page, so the tab is not closed while you have unsaved work. The text you type is not read or saved for this purpose.
Memory (PRO)
Memory is a private, searchable record of pages you read. For pages you actively read for at least 10 seconds, WhyTab saves:
- the page URL and title- the visible text of the page- your reading time and scroll position- any highlights you choose to save
Pages that contain password fields are never saved. Mail, banking and sign-in sites are skipped by default, and you can edit that list. You can pause Memory at any time.
Where it is stored
Tab manager data lives in chrome.storage.local. Memory lives in your browser's IndexedDB. Both are on your computer, inside your Chrome profile. WhyTab does not sync them to any server, and the developer cannot see them.
Permissions explained
- tabs: Read each tab's URL, title and state so it can list, park, close and restore tabs.
- storage: Save your settings, timers and parked tabs on your device.
- unlimitedStorage: Memory can hold more text than Chrome's default storage limit allows. It still stays on your device.
- alarms: Run a once-a-minute check that parks tabs whose timers have ended.
- contextMenus: Add the right-click options "Save highlight to WhyTab Memory" and "Forget this page".
- favicon: Show site icons next to your parked and remembered pages, using Chrome's local icon cache.
- Access to web pages: Show the "Why this tab?" prompt, restore your scroll position, and, for Memory, read the visible text of pages you read. All of this is processed on your device.
What WhyTab never does
- Sell or share your data with anyone- Track you or use analytics- Send your tabs, pages or text off your device- Use remote code. All code ships inside the extension package- Use your data for advertising, credit or lending decisions
Your control
- Pause Memory whenever you like.- Forget a single page from the dashboard or with a right-click.- Erase all Memory in one step.- Export your Memory as JSON.- Uninstall WhyTab to delete all data it stored.
Chrome Web Store compliance
WhyTab's use of information received from Chrome APIs follows the Chrome Web Store User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements. Data is used only to provide the tab management and Memory features described on this page.
Changes and contact
If this policy changes, the date at the top will change and any new data practice will be described here before it ships. WhyTab is not directed at children under 13.
