Stages of IVF

Managing IVF cycles requires a fair amount of planning. Having a thorough and thorough physical exam and tests beforehand helps create a 'foundation' for understanding a woman's specific cycle and what she needs.

Normally, as part of an IVF cycle, women need to take hormones to increase the number of eggs they produce. This means that at the time of egg collection, there are many eggs to choose from.

First things first – the 10 typical stages of IVF

  1. The woman’s normal menstrual cycle is halted with daily hormone injections or a nasal spray.

  2. Fertility hormone injections help to stimulate her ovaries so she produces several eggs.

  3. After the eggs have matured, they are collected via a needle into a fine tube. The woman has a light anaesthetic during this procedure.

  4. The eggs are then fertilised in the laboratory with the partner’s or donor’s sperm.

  5. The fertilised eggs, now called embryos, are grown for a few days in an incubator.

  6. One or two of the healthiest embryos are transferred into the woman’s uterus. A fine tube is inserted into the woman’s vagina and up through her cervix into her uterus.

  7. A positive pregnancy test will show if an embryo successfully implants. Generally, it takes two weeks for the pregnancy test to pick up hCG – human chorionic gonadotrophin hormone (pregnancy hormone) if it’s present.

  8. If there are any healthy embryos leftover, they can be frozen and stored for later use if needed.

  9. Generally, women who have IVF will have more than one cycle.

  10. IVF can be carried out with many variations. Donor eggs and/or sperm, surrogate pregnancy and embryo storage are all options, depending on an individual’s situation.

What are my chances of success with IVF?

Your chances of a successful pregnancy will depend on your individual situation. However, on average, for each cycle of IVF a woman undergoes, her chances of becoming pregnant and having a baby are about 1 in 5.

IVF success is more likely for women under the age of 35. Women who are older have lower success rates. Some women need 5 (or more) IVF cycles to get pregnant. And some women, despite doing everything, are not able to conceive successfully.

Each clinic has its own costs and fees, although competition among fertility clinics is helping to control costs. Many fertility treatments are deductible through Medicare and the Medicare Safety Net offers additional discounts for those who are paying large amounts in medical expenses.

On average, one cycle of IVF in one calendar year costs around 1.2lakh Of this, about 1 lakh would be 'out of pocket'. This cost goes down once the safety net is reached.

Some IVF clinics only charge a Medicare deductible fee. However most clinics are private and their fees exceed the Medicare exemption alone.

Freezing and storing eggs, sperm, and embryos is an additional cost, as will you need to take any medications.
