Paul_31, thanks for your input. Unfortunately I've already tried your advice but I still encounter the whooshing. At least your answer narrows things down a bit. Regarding when the whooshing occurs, I'm at a loss because it seems to occur at random.

After updating to the recent Yosemite 10.10.3 my email no longer makes the 'whoosh' sound when I send email. All other Mac system sounds work fine, just no mail whoosh anymore. I thoroughly checked all the sound system and mail prefs and they are set appropriately at default. There are no earplugs or other sound devices plugged in. In fact, there have been no changes to my setup other than software updates. I quit and restarted Mail and rebooted the Mac, all too no affect.

I tried a bunch of the suggestions but what worked (and I found odd) was that even though I had turned off "do not disturb" in system preferences> notifications> do not disturb, when I went to the actual notification center in the upper right corner of my screen, "do not disturb" was still active. I turned it off there, and now I have sounds again. If you don't see it right away, scroll upwards because it sometimes hides above what you see, not sure why they make it do that. I find it odd that turning it off in one place doesn't affect the other. Here's a screenshot of where to look....

Sorry to reply to old string, but might be beneficial to others. I had a similar problem, didn't notice though that I also was not receiving the incoming mail sound either. A recent apple update had changed my sound effects output (in the Sounds control panel) from my primary output to the digital output.

I tried with the Apple rep going to system preferences, shutting down the computer, reinstalling the Sierra 10.12.2 operating system (which took quite a bit of time), and finally after reading your recommendation and seeing your illustration, I finally was able to get the "swoosh" sound back on my e-mails plus the sound for receiving e-mails. Thank you!

Using whoosh sound effects in video editing is one of my favorite tricks, it can communicate the passing of time or just add a nice rhythm to your edits. I Always searched for the best sounding whooshes and never find perfection so i tried to create them myself!

Using my magnetic marble picker stick I made a sword-like whip motion through the air in front of an Ehrlund EHR-M LCM Microphone through a RME Micstasy Preamp and i really like the sound of the results! I tried to hit the air super close to the mic and managed to never hit the mic itself :).

In the package you will find 12 audio samples, 4 soft, 4 medium and 4 hard whooshes!

Hope you will like them and find them useful!

My gosh, what a peachy batch of whooshes. Thanks a bunch @jonray.

Should you be interested to embellish your whoosh collection with more whooshes, I have in my possession a short list of whooshes that I also wish to share.

the swoosh sounds can be found by right clicking on ichat in the application folder and selecting show package content then go into contents then resources and its "buddy logging in.aiff" and "buddy logging out.aiff"

Creating your own sound effects probably sounds a bit daunting. Granted, in order to record quality effects, you do need a decent microphone. With that said, you can create sound effects using a basic phone microphone and some effects on a DAW.

There are a number of reasons to be a contributor. One of the most attractive is the potential to earn passive income through your sounds, and another is the chance to help out fellow creatives by providing awesome effects they can use in content. Sign up to Synchedin, and start your contributor application today!

You can use things like books, baking trays, pretty much whatever you like, and flap it quickly across your mic. This will create a nice whoosh of air that you can then manipulate in your DAW. Alternatively, you can make whoosh sounds with your mouth, moving the microphone past your face, to give the effect of motion.

These are sound effects created/designed by Joel Valentine. Some modified versions can be on The Producer's Sound Effects Library as files dubbed as "FIREBALL BY #1-4", "FIREBALL IN #1-3. DULL HIT." and "PROJECTILE IN #1-4".

The sound fx whoosh collection includes swipes at a variety of speeds. Many whooshes are pre-pitched to pleasing semitones. Each whoosh is trimmed into its own file, complete with a unique file name and 19+ fields of full Soundminer metadata. All whooshes are carefully organized into folders with their similar sister and brother swipes.

I had the idea of taking three mics, placed next to each other with about 5cm-10cm distance in between all pointing to the ceiling. The panning was Left Center Right, the side mics were classic 8040s (AB positioning) and for the center I took a 8020. The 8020 in the middle is like the main microphone and the 8040s are meant to capture the stereo movement. Also I made sure that the mics were pointing to a sound absorber hanging at my ceiling to prevent early reflections from my room hitting the microphones.

If you want to go further, take your favorite plugins and add a nice fx chain. Reverb and delay, some subtle compression and distortion, modulation fx and formant filtering are great effects to work with! Change their slot in the chain, automate their parameters and you will go crazy with new sounds. Layer your whooshes, pan them differently and expand your own whoosh library with some fresh new sounds. To give you an idea where to start, here is an example chain of how I like to process my whooshes: 1.) Low cut and subtractive EQ, 2.) Compression to control the dynamic range, 3.) Saturation (sometimes I put it at the end before the limiter to glue the sound together and take off some dynamics), 4.) Creative fx like modular fx, reverb/delay, formant filtering and more 5) True peak limiter at the end for safety reasons.

I happened to have the Faded Wizard Hat toy, which has a 30m cooldown and transforms me into an orc for 30 minutes. For now, I figure I can just use this to get the sound effects to play correctly for me until Blizzard finally fixes this bug.
