Term 1 2526 Herbert Morrison Newsletter Issue 54 Thursday 4th September 2025
First Newsletter of the Academic Year 2025/26
Dear Parents and Carers,
Welcome Back!
It has been wonderful to see the children return after the summer break, ready for a new year of learning and fun. A very special welcome goes to our brand-new Hummingbird Reception Class, who joined us this week. We are also expecting some new families in other year groups and know that our school community will make them all feel very welcome.
We look forward to seeing you at the Meet the Parents meetings next week – please do check the diary dates carefully so you don’t miss out on a thing!
Our School Motto – High Care, High Challenge
This year we are continuing to live out our school motto: High Care, High Challenge.
High Care means we are kind, supportive, and respectful – looking after ourselves, each other and our environment.
High Challenge means we push ourselves to do our very best, persevere when things are tricky, and aim high in all that we do.
Please take a moment to ask your child what High Care, High Challenge means to them – you may be surprised at the thoughtful answers they give!
Breakfast Club – JAGs
We’re pleased to let you know that JAGs have re-opened the Breakfast Club, starting from 7:30am each morning. Please do make use of this service if it supports your family. If take-up is too low to keep the club viable, the offer may unfortunately be withdrawn.
Newsletters & Communication
📰 Our newsletters are sent out fortnightly to keep you up to date.
📧 Letters and updates will be emailed out every Thursday, so please check your inbox regularly.
🌐 Don’t forget our school website is also a great source of information – please make the most of this resource.
School Uniform, Belongings & Water Bottles Reminder
👔 Uniform – Children should wear the full school uniform each day, including a tie and black shoes (not trainers).
🏃 PE Kit – On PE days, children may come into school wearing their PE kit. A school jumper can be worn, but other hoodies are not part of the uniform.
💧 Water Bottles – All children are expected to bring a water bottle to school each day as part of their uniform. This should be filled with plain water only. Staying hydrated helps the brain work at its best – even mild dehydration can affect concentration, memory, and energy levels. A sip of water really does support learning!
💍 Jewellery – No jewellery, please.
🎒 Bags – Due to limited space in classrooms, children should bring a school book bag. If a larger bag is needed, we can accommodate a few per day, but we ask that this is only when essential and not every day.
🧥 Labelling – Please make sure all clothing items, water bottles, bags, scooters and bikes are clearly labelled so that lost items can find their way home.
🚲 Scooters & Bikes – Please do not leave scooters or bikes in the playground overnight, as this unfortunately attracts break-ins.
We hope these reminders will help everything run smoothly. Thank you for your support in keeping our school smart, safe, and ready for learning.
A Reminder About Appointments
We kindly ask that, wherever possible, parents arrange medical or personal appointments for their children outside of school hours. There are only 190 school days in the year, but a generous 175 non-school days available for holidays, family time, and events. By keeping appointments to these non-school days, we can work together to make sure every child enjoys the very best attendance and learning opportunities.
Thank you for your support!

📢 Illness Reminder 📢
If your child is unwell at school, we will call you to collect them. Please ensure we have your up-to-date contact details.
Please remember to inform the school of your child's absence each day; even if the school knows they are home due to vomiting - this is to update school if new symptoms develop. The best way to do this is via Studybugs.
Currently, 66% of parents are using Studybugs—if you’re among the 37% who haven’t signed up yet, please do so as soon as possible!
Please download the STUDY BUGS app and support us in raising our attendance %.
Please help your child achieve by ensuring they are in school when they are well enough to be here.
Medical Appointment Documentation
Please ensure all appointments are made outside of school hours.
To help us accurately record absences, please email a copy of any medical appointment texts or appointment cards to the school office for confirmation when your child(ren) is absent for health-related reasons. This ensures their attendance records are kept up-to-date.
When making appointments please ask your doctors for a medical slip or appointment text to give to school.
Thank you for your cooperation and support.

Changes to How Parents Book
Bookings follow a regular weekly pattern (e.g., every Monday), secured for the full school year.
This system is similar to the existing instalment plan model that many families are familiar with.
We are making this change to:
Support demand management where waiting lists are common
Ensure fair access for families looking to secure consistent care
Enable earlier, more accurate staffing and programming plans
Rise then Shine
Rise then Shine Breakfast Club will re-start in September from 7.30am.
The FREE school Breakfast Club is still available for all pupils ( Reception Class to Year 6) from 8.30am.
This will be from 7.30am - please book now!
After School Clubs
JAG’s After School Clubs, called Stay And Play, offer fun, happy and safe places for children to play freely across age groups and take part in structured activities such as arts and crafts and active play. Providing an energising end to the school day, children can join group activities, enjoy a healthy snack, or chill out with toys and games that are all set up and ready for them to enjoy.
