Term 6 2024 Herbert Morrison Newsletter Issue 32 Thursday 4th July 2024
Dear Parents and Carers,
As we approach the end of term, I'd like to highlight some important events and updates.
Report Day
Today is REPORT DAY! Reports are coming home with your child, and you'll have the opportunity to discuss these with the class teacher on Tuesday at the optional parents' evening. You can also pop into see your child's next class teacher on this afternoon. Please remember that your child must be collected from school at 2 pm unless they are booked in for after school care at Wyvil. There will be no clubs running on this day.
Graduation Ceremony
With Year 6 leaving, we are looking forward to the graduation ceremony tomorrow – tissues at the ready! Parents and carers of Year 6 children are invited, and we have space for two adults per child. If you need a third seat, please call the office to check availability, as these will be offered on a first-come, first-served basis. If, for any reason, you are unable to attend, please inform the office so we can re-allocate your seat.
Farewells
We also prepare to say goodbye to some cherished staff members. Miss Evelyn, who has supported children at Herbert Morrison for 34 years, and Mr. Shepherd, who has taught here for 26 years, will be leaving the team this summer. Miss Evelyn is taking a well-earned retirement, and Mr. Shepherd is taking a well-deserved break before contemplating his next chapter. I would like to publicly thank them for their dedication and let them know they will be greatly missed – an impressive 60 years of service between them! We all wish them well in their next adventures and hope they stay in touch and visit us with their news next year.
Miss McPherson will also be leaving the team to move to a local school in the federation – lucky school! Although she hasn't been with us long, Miss McPherson has left a lasting and positive impression, and we hope to have her back at some point in the future.
As we count down the last two weeks of the term, let's continue to celebrate and cherish these moments together.
Kind regards

Which of your skills are you most proud of and why?
Looking after your physical health can have a positive impact on your mental and emotional wellbeing. A healthy and balanced diet can help how you feel physically and avoiding certain foods can help if you're feeling low or anxious. Regular exercise doesn’t need to mean running 5ks but may include regular walks,
or visualisation.
‘Making time to exercise is really important even if its just walking around the block with your baby in a pram.’
The National Online Safety #WakeupWednesday is included on our X ( aka Twitter ) @HerbMorrPriSch.
The term “trolling” refers to sending hurtful or provocative comments – often done anonymously online – to provoke a reaction or cause emotional distress. Anonymity can embolden people into saying things they wouldn’t dare say in person. Euro 2024 and other tournaments tend to put an emphasis on this, with the abuse of both players and fans often increasing during such events.
This guide explores the phenomenon of online trolling, detailing its risks and letting you know how to safeguard children from this harmful behaviour.
Some people online simply get a kick out of hurting people’s feelings, making it their mission to get a rise out of anyone they encounter. These people – known as “trolls” – are known for intentionally engaging in offensive or abusive behaviour to upset others online or provoke them into sinking to their level. At the height of events such as Euro 2024, when rivalries between various supporters reach an apex, trolling tends to see a bit of an uptick.
Unfortunately, while “just ignore them” is genuinely good advice, it can prove very difficult to put into practice. This is especially true for children and young people, who are often still learning how to manage their emotions and sometimes react impulsively to name-calling and other mistreatment. This Wake up Wednesday, however, we’re offering expert guidance on how to keep youngsters safe from online trolling – both avoiding it entirely and responding to it effectively.
Ask your child what SMART with a HEART means.
The lunch menus are on a 3 week rota - please find the Monday date at the top to know what will be on offer for the week. There are 3 menus to see below. Yum!
Please note that there has been a change to the Friday Fish vs Fish fingers following a democratic vote led by the children. Fish will be for 2 weeks and Fish fingers will be for 1 week out of the 3 as 30% votes for the fish fingers and 60% votes for fish!
As we roll into summer and the school holidays loom, our minds in libraries turn to those long joyous weeks for the children away from school. In Libraries, of course, we're still here throughout, and we'll be running The Summer Reading Challenge encouraging children to keep reading during the summer holidays, ensuring they are ready for a great start to the new term in the autumn. Children set a reading goal and collect rewards for reading anything they enjoy. Children can sign up here at their local library or online, and it’s FREE to take part.
This year’s Challenge is called Marvellous Makers and it’s all about creativity! From dance to drawing, junk modelling to music, there’s something for everyone. The Challenge starts on Saturday 6 July.
We are also looking for older teenagers interested in volunteering this summer to help with the Summer Reading Challenge for younger children. To find out more ask at your local library.
