Mrs Peake's - Headteacher Highlights

As we embrace the energy of a new week, we are delighted to share the excitement brewing in our school diary! Events are coming thick and fast, promising an engaging and enriching experience for our students.

📚 Visiting Author - Monday Run Like a Girl - Danielle Brown: We are ready to ignite the imaginations of our budding authors as we welcome another accomplished wordsmith on Monday. Danielle's gold medal stories and insights of determination, dreaming big and living with a growth mindset are sure to inspire creativity and passion for the written word as well as fostering a positive learning attitude. What a great way to celebrate International Womens Day!

🌙 Ramadan Month: As we embark on the sacred month of Ramadan, we extend warm wishes to all families observing this holy occasion. If your child will be fasting, kindly inform the school in writing, ensuring we can provide the necessary support and understanding during this special time.

🔬 Science Week and Science Night - 'Who Done It?' Science Night: We're putting the finishing touches on a thrilling Science Week, culminating in a spectacular 'Who Done It?' Science Night for lucky Year 5+6 only. Join us as we unravel mysteries, conduct experiments, and celebrate the wonder of science with an evening of interactive fun.

👔 School Uniform Reminder: We kindly request your cooperation in supporting our school uniform policy. Ensure your child wears black shoes, not trainers, as part of their school uniform. Trainers are permitted only with a PE kit. All children should also wear a tie, bring a water bottle and a book bag. Additionally, we encourage the use of the school fleece to stay extra warm and not a non-uniform hoodie. Together we can maintain a sense of unity and pride in our school community.

I look forward to seeing you at the Parents Evening this afternoon. Please come and speak with our Governors who will have a table by the front entrance and be available to speak to you about the proposed Federation. Please share your views using the available paper response forms which we will have ready and waiting for you.

Attendance Matters so give it 100%

If you have one day off school, this is roughly equivalent to missing 0.5% of the school year. This is not a lot of time at all. However, if you have a week off school, this could equate to 3.68% of your attendance lost. If you miss one whole month overall, this is approximately equivalent to 15% of your attendance.

Last 2 weeks - 21st Feb to 6th March '24

We are just below the expected 95% if we look at the last 2 weeks.

The Department of Education has issued guidance for Parents in January 2024

At Herbert Morrison we need attendance to be your priority. Attendance matters!

Please call the office to explain any absence - this is recorded on our system and saves office staff having to call you. Call between 8.30am and 8.50am on every day of absence or email admin@herbertmorrison.lambeth.sch.uk

Good attendance at school is the single most important factor to ensure that young people have the maximum life chances – attendance is strongly linked to educational achievement. Promoting positive school attendance is everyone’s responsibility.

Family Well Being

Starting a conversation can be difficult, especially if you’re worried that your child is having a hard time. It doesn’t matter what topic the conversation starts with – it’s about the opportunity it gives you both to talk about feelings and to provide comfort.

Here are some conversation ideas to start things off...

SERIOUS QUESTIONS

Well-being - MEASLES

Lambeth schools have been informed from the Council that 'we are anticipating a potential increase in measles cases associated with schools. Measles is a very infectious virus that can spread from person-to-person quickly, especially in education and childcare settings.

Lambeth Public Health is organising two sessions of MMR vaccination clinics at the Civic Centre, 6 Brixton Hill, London SW2 1EG. Children and adults are welcome to attend.

The clinics will be held on:

Please make every effort to contact your GP or attend one of these sessions if you’re currently unprotected against measles or unsure about your vaccination status.

Your health and safety, as well as that of your students, are of utmost importance.

If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to reach out to us at publichealth@lambeth.gov.uk.

ONLINE SAFETY - BULLYING

The National Olne Safety #WakeupWednesday is included on our X ( aka Twitter ) @HerbMorrPriSch.

Bullying has long been a pervasive issue in schools – and, being realistic, it’s regrettably a problem which is always likely to exist to a certain extent. There are still plenty of steps we can take as trusted adults, however, to lend support, comfort and reassurance to children who are going through this deeply upsetting experience.

Such a highly emotive topic can be a difficult one to talk about with children – but honest, open communication nevertheless remains vital to young victims’ wellbeing. It’s important to be aware, then, of effective ways to broach and explore the subject. Our #WakeUpWednesday guide has expert advice on effective ways to support children who are being bullied.

OUT OF SCHOOL IDEAS

Mrs Peake worked closely with this company last year and highly recommends them to tutor and support children. They offer online group tutoring in all subject areas and an exciting book club. They have kindly agreed to give Herbert Morrison children a discount. (Thank you GBA 😁)

A great way to spend Mothers' Day - creating a memorable mosaic mirror.
