Mrs Peake's - Headteacher Highlights

Happy New Year! I hope you had a fantastic break.

MINDSET

We've kicked off Term 3 with a strong start, focusing on growth and fixed mindsets. Your children are embracing this language; fostering a positive and productive learning environment. Our book of the week is "Run Like a Girl" by Danielle Brown. Ask your child about Danielle and the other inspiring sportswomen featured in the book. Danielle's work has inspired some impressive classwork and supports the attitude focus supporting our values and manners work his term; 'Mindset'.

WRITING FOR PLEASURE

Thank you for grabbing a pen and joining in with writing in school this week. This was our busiest turn out and shows how your support is growing - just like your children's minds!

COLD WEATHER

With the cold weather in mind, please ensure your child has named coats and gloves. The children are outside for an hour at lunchtime and while they are running around to keep warm - their fingers do get chilly!

UNIFORM

Please ensure that your child attends school in the correct uniform. Ties, bookbags and water bottles are all part of the uniform. For the colder weather we have an optional jumper and fleece, which can be worn together should you prefer. Please do not send children into school in hoodies. PE kit is black tracksuit bottoms/shorts/leggings. Please ensure that children only wear trainers with their PE kit and not at any other time. PE kits are worn into school on PE days and if your child is attending a sports club after school.

ATTENDANCE

Punctuality is crucial, and we're supporting the government's attendance initiative. Let's aim for children to be in class by 8.50 am everyday – 10 to 9 is on time! Please bring your children onto the school site and do not leave children unattended outside of the school unattended, especially if the school gate is locked.

I hope the year ahead brings growth, learning, and wonderful moments for you and your family.

Attendance Matters

We have slipped below 95% as a whole school and have an overall attendance of 93.5% for Term 3 so far.

The Department of Education has issued this guidance for Parents in January 2024

What does it mean if a child is persistently or severely absent?

Children who are registered at a school but regularly fail to turn up are officially referred to as being ‘persistently’ or ‘severely’ absent.

The school day is split into two sessions – one session counts as a morning or afternoon spent in school.

Pupils who have missed more than 10 percent of school sessions are considered persistently absent, while children who have missed more than 50 percent of school sessions are referred to as severely absent.

At Herbert Morrison we need attendance to be your priority. The school will be contacting families with persistently absent children to support with this important area of focus.

Please call the office to explain any absence - this is recorded on our system and saves office staff having to call you. Call between 8.30am and 8.50am on every day of absence or email admin@herbertmorrison.lambeth.sch.uk

Good attendance at school is the single most important factor to ensure that young people have the maximum life chances – attendance is strongly linked to educational achievement. Promoting positive school attendance is everyone’s responsibility.

What happens when we are honest about our mistakes?

Why do you think it's important to tell the truth, even when it might be difficult? Can you share a time when being honest made a situation better?

Top TIPS for managing screen time

The National Online Safety #WakeupWednesday is included on our X ( aka Twitter ) @HerbMorrPriSch.

From using them for communication, work, shopping and entertainment, devices such as smartphones, laptops and the rest are now deeply ingrained into modern society. Small wonder, then, that young people – who’ve grown up surrounded by such gadgets – can sometimes struggle to put them down, switch them off or keep themselves occupied without them.

While limiting our screen time may require a great deal of restraint, the effort can be rewarded with significant benefits to our physical and mental health. Our #WakeUpWednesday guide has simple tips for helping to manage the amount of screen time in your household – encouraging the whole family to spend more quality time together and live in the moment.
