Term 4 2526 Herbert Morrison Newsletter Issue 66 Thursday 19th March 2026
Dear Parents and Carers,
It has been another busy and exciting time in school, with lots of wonderful learning taking place across all year groups.
Bikeability
Our children are really on the move with Bikeability. This fantastic programme is helping them to develop their cycling skills, balance and road safety awareness. Children only progress onto the roads once they are confident and ready — it has been excellent to see their confidence grow.
Uniform Reminder
We would appreciate your support in maintaining our high standards of school uniform. We have noticed that trainers are beginning to creep in — please remember that trainers should only be worn with PE kits. School shoes should be worn at all other times. Thank you for your continued support with this.
Science Week – Curiosity Day
We have had an exciting Science Week. Our Curiosity Day was full of discovery and enthusiasm. Did you know that a lime will float with its peel on, but sinks once the peel is removed?
Our KS1 children also investigated how to make a carrot float — and were very successful. It was wonderful to see such engagement and curiosity across the school.
Value of the Week – Curiosity
This week, we are focusing on curiosity — encouraging children to keep asking questions, exploring ideas and developing a love of learning. This value continues to be evident across all areas of school life.
Trips and Off-Site Behaviour
As the weather improves, we are looking forward to more trips and visits. Please speak with your child about the importance of safe and respectful behaviour when off-site.
For children who regularly attend places such as Ben Hollioake Learning Centre and swimming, expectations are reinforced weekly. Where concerns arise, we follow a clear approach:
A conversation with parents to raise awareness and work in partnership
A letter home if behaviours continue
A further incident may result in a child missing a session and spending time in school reflecting and completing appropriate work
Although we do not expect this to be necessary with our well-behaved and lovely children, we feel it is important that expectations are clear.
Parents’ Evening
Thank you to all parents and carers who attended Parents’ Evening. It was a pleasure to share your child’s progress and next steps with you. We have received many positive comments and greatly appreciate your feedback and continued support.
Thank you, as always, for working in partnership with us.
Kind regards,
Mrs Peake
Headteacher
Years 5 and 6 were invited to attend an 'escape room' style evening to solve the 'Who Dunnit?' mystery. It was full of excitement and scientific discovery - as you will see in the video.
🔬🥕 Curiosity Day!
To finish off Science Week, we joined schools across England to investigate how to make a carrot float! The children experimented, made predictions and used lots of scientific vocabulary while learning fascinating facts.
These children have been recognised for their incredible effort and excellence! They will receive a golden certificate, a big round of applause during the celebration assembly, and a coveted spot in the prestigious Gold Book. Well done to all our shining stars!

A Reminder About Appointments and Holidays
We kindly ask that, wherever possible, parents arrange medical or personal appointments for their children outside of school hours. There are only 190 school days in the year, but a generous 175 non-school days available for holidays, family time, and events. By keeping appointments to these non-school days, we can work together to make sure every child enjoys the very best attendance and learning opportunities. Thank you for your support!
📢 Illness Reminder 📢
If your child is unwell at school, we will call you to collect them. Please ensure we have your up-to-date contact details.
Please remember to inform the school of your child's absence each day; even if the school knows they are home due to vomiting - this is to update school if new symptoms develop. The best way to do this is via Studybugs.
Currently, 69% of parents are using Studybugs—if you’re among the 31% who haven’t signed up yet, please do so as soon as possible!
Please download the STUDY BUGS app and support us in raising our attendance %.
Overall we are at 95.1% for this academic year. With your help we aim to maintain this to the end of the year. Please download the STUDY BUGS app and support us in raising our attendance %.
Please help your child achieve by ensuring they are in school when they are well enough to be here.
Medical Appointment Documentation
Please ensure all appointments are made outside of school hours.
To help us accurately record absences, please email a copy of any medical appointment texts or appointment cards to the school office for confirmation when your child(ren) is absent for health-related reasons. This ensures their attendance records are kept up-to-date.
When making appointments please ask your doctors for a medical slip or appointment text to give to school.
Thank you for your cooperation and support.

The question of the week is -
What can we do if we feel worried but want to try something new?
We discuss the values and question of the week in assembly. Discuss these with your child at home.
The value of the week is: CURIOSITY
Violent clips, online ‘wars’, and shock-value challenges can spread rapidly across social media feeds – often appearing in front of young people who weren’t actively looking for them. This guide explains how algorithms, messaging groups and viral trends can expose children to real-world violence online, sometimes normalising harmful behaviour or encouraging risky offline actions.
It also highlights the emotional, social and legal risks linked to engaging with violent content. From anxiety and community fear to the dangers of sharing or promoting violent posts, the guide offers practical advice for parents and educators on discussing online safety, understanding the law, and helping young people respond positively and responsibly.
SPECIAL DIETRY REQUIREMENTS
