Term 5 2024 Herbert Morrison Newsletter Issue 28 Thursday 2nd May 2024
Dear Parents and Carers,
I hope this newsletter finds you well as we approach a busy and exciting time at our school. Here are some important updates and reminders:
Respectful Communication: We kindly remind everyone to speak respectfully to our staff at all times, including during telephone conversations. Your cooperation in maintaining a positive and respectful environment is greatly appreciated.
Idling Lorries: Thank you to those who have taken action regarding idling lorries and dangerous parking on Hartington Road. We've also reached out to relevant authorities and today we received assurance from the Head of Climate Change & Sustainability that this issue is a priority. I want to clarify that Clifford Devlin, with whom we have a positive working relationship, is not responsible for the idling lorries. In fact, earlier this academic year, they delivered an engaging presentation to our children about site safety, including a demonstration of a lorry driver's blind spots. Please remind your children of these safety messages while we work on addressing the idling, polluting, and dangerous vehicles during pick-up and drop-off times.
If you would like to report the lorries yourself please take a photo, including a clear image of the registration number and report via Lambeth Parking - REPORT A PARKING OFFENCE https://www.lambeth.gov.uk/parking
Uniform Reminder: Thank you to everyone for complying with our tie and black shoes not trainers uniform expectation. If a child arrives in trainers with their school uniform, the office will call home to request their black school shoes are delivered to the office. Some children are sneaking in with their sneakers even when we know they have shoes at home. Please check your child's footwear before they leave home to save the office an additional task and to save yourself a journey. Your support in maintaining our school's uniform standards is invaluable. They will look united in their upcoming class photos with a tie and a smile! (Friday 17th May)
Wyvil After School Care Pick up on or before 5.50pm: We appreciate Wyvil School's collaboration in providing this valuable service to our children. However, repeated late collections have become an issue. Please note that children are negatively affected by late pickups, and it also impacts staff working hours. Wyvil has now informed us that families with more than 2 late collections may result in losing their after-school care place. They understand that one off emergencies happen; please call ahead if you anticipate being late. Thank you for your cooperation in ensuring a smooth after-school experience for all.
Assessment Season: It is assessment season, providing our students with an opportunity to 'show off' their knowledge and understanding. Supportive revision and regular bedtimes are key to helping your child excel during this time. Remember to utilise resources like BBC Bitesize for comprehensive revision across subjects, and encourage your child to practice using their school online maths subscriptions. All year groups will be assessed in the summer term and this is shared with you in the school reports that you receive later in the summer term.
Stress Support: Stress can be challenging for some students. For tips on supporting children, please read this BBC article. We want our students to approach learning positively and confidently, showcasing their best efforts. Please remind them of the positive mindset and perseverance information we have been focusing on over the past few terms. Many children will not be aware of assessments happening as they are presented within the usual teaching routines. Thank you for your positive and encouraging support during this time. If you revise with your child this will make the learning more memorable - we want the revision and learning to stick!
Your continued partnership and involvement in your child's education are highly valued. Please do not hesitate to reach out if you have any questions or concerns.
Warm regards,
Mrs Peake - Headteacher

At Herbert Morrison we need attendance to be your priority. Attendance matters!
Please call the office to explain any absence - this is recorded on our system and saves office staff having to call you. Call between 8.30am and 8.50am on every day of absence or email admin@herbertmorrison.lambeth.sch.uk
Good attendance at school is the single most important factor to ensure that young people have the maximum life chances – attendance is strongly linked to educational achievement. Promoting positive school attendance is everyone’s responsibility.
Good attendance is important in order for children to:
Achieve their potential.
Develop a positive attitude towards school and maintain good habits of punctuality and attendance.
See themselves as an important part of the school community and to value and respect school life.
Questions to Consider:
Do you know what your child’s current attendance and/or punctuality figure is?
Do you know what this figure means?
Do you speak to your child about their attendance?
Do you communicate with the office on 0207 720 3439 when your child is not in school?

2 WEEK DIARY
We discuss the values and question of the week in assembly. Discuss these with your child at home.
You see someone throwing stones in the playground - what would you do? What could the consequences of choosing to throw stones be?
Starting a conversation can be difficult, especially if you’re worried that your child is having a hard time. It doesn’t matter what topic the conversation starts with – it’s about the opportunity it gives you both to talk about feelings and to provide comfort.
Look back over the past few Newsletters for some conversation starter ideas - we hope you have enjoyed chatting with your child
We are aware that assessments have the potential to exacerbate feelings of anxiety and stress amongst young people. That is why it's important that whilst pupils should be encouraged to work hard, this should not be at the expense of their wellbeing.
There is a range of advice and guidance for students and parents to help alleviate or lessen the anxiety they have about sitting exams, including:

On 19th April 2024, Ofcom released their annual Media Use and Attitudes Report, detailing the findings of several surveys and their implications for parents, children and young people in the UK. These statistics often include plenty of thought-provoking information relating to online safety.
The report itself is extremely extensive, so instead we've provided a bespoke selection of data gathered by Ofcom about children and young people’s experiences on social media, video games and the like. Check our guide for a thorough breakdown of the headline findings.
More information and a weekly update of these low cost suggestions can be found on the Oval Learning Cluster Website - Families Page. Our School works in Partnership with the Oval Learning Cluster.
