The Samsung QN90B QLED is the best upper mid-range Samsung TV we've tested. Alongside the Samsung QN95B QLED, which is basically the same TV with an external connection box, it's Samsung's flagship 4k LED TV for 2022, featuring an impressive Mini LED backlight to increase the appearance of small highlights and reduce blooming in dark scenes. It's an excellent TV overall with a great selection of features, so there's something for everyone. It's not quite as good as the Samsung S95B OLED in a dark room, though, as there's still some blooming around bright objects, and blacks aren't perfectly deep and inky.
On the other hand, it's a better choice for watching shows in bright rooms because it has fantastic reflection handling and easily gets bright enough to fight glare, so visibility isn't an issue even in the brightest rooms. It also comes with Samsung's 'Ultra Viewing Angle' technology that provides a good viewing angle, which is good for wide seating areas as the image remains consistent when viewed from the side.
Unfortunately, this wider viewing angle comes at the expense of contrast, so it doesn't look as good as the Samsung QN90B QLED or the Samsung S95B OLED in a dark room. Like most Samsung TVs, it has great gaming features, and all four HDMI ports support HDMI 2.1 bandwidth for console gamers. It runs the 2022 version of the Tizen OS smart interface, which has a huge selection of streaming apps and an easy-to-use interface.
The Samsung AU8000 is the best budget Samsung TV we've tested. Although Samsung isn't known for their budget models, this TV offers decent overall performance at a low cost. It's available in a wide range of sizes, from 43 to 85 inches, and they all perform like the 65-inch model we tested. Unlike Samsung's more expensive models like the Samsung QN90B QLED and Samsung Q80/Q80B QLED, it doesn't use quantum dot technology and can't display a wide color gamut.
Samsung TVs generally have better picture quality than the average LG LED-backlit LCD TV. Samsung TVs usually get a fair bit brighter and have better contrast, while LG TVs generally have much wider viewing angles and have better smart features. While LG has more OLEDs, Samsung released their first QD-OLED, which produces brighter colors than LG's OLEDs.
In early January 2023, Samsung announced the vast majority of their 2023 lineup. As usual, Samsung is releasing a very wide range of TVs, but like last year, their focus has shifted to high-end models, with very few new entry-level models, and their mid-range selection is relatively unchanged. Like most brands in 2023, Samsung's focus is on increasing the peak brightness of their high-end TVs and improving the Mini LED backlight features with smaller zones that will deliver a better local dimming feature. They've also expanded their QD-OLED lineup, with a larger 77-inch version now available, and it's now available with or without Samsung's signature One Connect box, so you can choose the model that best suits your needs.
Samsung has constantly been updating its Tizen platform to ensure it competes with its competitors. In 2017, they added voice capabilities to their remote and smart platform, making it easier to navigate through menus. In 2018, they added Bixby virtual assistant, so you can use voice control to control other Samsung devices in your house, like lights, fridges, and door locks. The 2020 update featured a new, sleeker look with a 'Dark Mode' that isn't as bright as the white theme in older versions, and the 2022 version has a new full-screen webpage, which is an improvement over past versions that had all the apps and settings in a toolbar.
Voice Command was overhauled in 2017, and they're pretty good now. Other smart interfaces were updated in 2018 to search for content and apps and change settings, something Samsung has been able to do for a few years. Even more in-depth stuff like calibration settings are only a button press away, which is quite nice.
It's less common now than in previous years, but Samsung TVs often have issues with Wi-Fi connections. They'll randomly stop functioning after leaving the TV off for a while and require the connection to be set up again, which is quite annoying.
55-inch TVs were once the most popular TV size, but larger TVs like 65-inch and 75-inch models are becoming more popular. Still, a 55-inch TV is good if you have a smaller living room, and finding the best 55-inch 4k TV for your needs depends on your usage, viewing conditions, and budget. High-end TVs tend to be great for a variety of uses and both in bright and dark rooms, while budget TVs are better if you need something simple and don't want premium performance. If you want something bigger, check out the best 65-inch TVs instead.
The Samsung S95B OLED is the best TV we've tested that's available in a 55-inch size. It's a premium TV that delivers fantastic overall picture quality and has a huge selection of smart features that are sure to please anyone. It's fantastic for gaming, thanks to its four HDMI 2.1 inputs, meaning you can take full advantage of the new-gen consoles, like the Xbox Series X and the PS5. The built-in Tizen OS is simple and easy to use and has a great selection of streaming apps.
If you're not in a completely dark room, a brighter LED TV like the Samsung QN90B QLED is a better choice than the Samsung S95B OLED. This TV delivers excellent picture quality, with very deep blacks, thanks to its Mini LED local dimming feature, which improves the appearance of dark scenes and brings out bright highlights. It makes it a worse choice for a dark room, as there's some distracting blooming around bright highlights in dark scenes. However, it's better than the S95B and the Sony A95K OLED, thanks to its high peak brightness and superb reflection handling, so glare isn't an issue.
It's a great TV for pretty much any use. It has a great selection of gaming features, including HDMI 2.1 bandwidth on all four HDMI inputs, meaning you can enjoy 4k @ 120Hz gaming from the new-gen consoles or a recent PC graphics card. It also supports Xbox Cloud Gaming, so you can enjoy some of the latest Xbox hits without investing in an expensive console. Like the S95B, it runs Samsung's proprietary Tizen OS smart interface, which is fairly easy to use and has a great selection of streaming apps available.
The best 55-inch mid-range TV is the LG C2 OLED. Like the top two TVs on this list, it's a premium TV with an OLED panel that delivers stunning picture quality, especially in dark rooms. OLEDs are unique because they can turn individual pixels off, resulting in a near-infinite contrast ratio for perfect blacks in dark rooms, and there isn't any blooming around bright objects either. It also has a wide viewing angle that makes the image remain consistent from the side, which is ideal if you have a wide seating area as everyone sees the same image.
Blacks aren't quite as deep and inky as the C2, and it has a much worse viewing angle, so it's not as versatile. It runs the Google TV smart interface, which is fast and easy to use, and it has a great selection of streaming features, so you're sure to find your favorite shows. It's great for gaming thanks to its two HDMI 2.1 bandwidth ports, which are great for 4k @ 120Hz gaming on the Xbox Series X or PS5 consoles.
It's a great TV for gaming, as it has superb low input lag and variable refresh rate support, so the action on-screen is in-sync with your actions on the controller, and there's very little screen tearing. Unlike the Hisense U8H, it's limited to a 60Hz refresh rate, which is a bit disappointing for new-gen gamers, but it's still great for visually-intensive games that target 4k @ 60Hz in their 'Graphics' mode.
If you want a basic TV and don't want to spend very much, the Hisense A6H is the best cheap TV we've tested that's available in a 55-inch size. As expected for the price, it's a simple TV with limited picture quality and few extra features, but it's a great choice for an office or guest bedroom. Like the Hisense U8H, it runs the Google TV smart interface, which has a huge selection of streaming apps available. It has a wide viewing angle, which is great if you watch TV while walking around, as the image remains consistent when viewed from the sides.

It's worth thinking hard about how important screen size is to you, though. You'll likely pay less for smaller screens, as with the 48-inch OLED TVs that generally offer premium TV tech for less, or the lower-spec models found at 40-inch sizes.
