The laptop also has a surprisingly comfortable keyboard, fast performance and a host of security features, including an IR camera, a fingerprint sensor and MIL-SPEC-810 rated durability. The 10th Gen Intel CPUs, while lacking graphical oomph, are powerful, and the battery lasts for longer than 11 hours on a charge.

Another draw of this amazing Samsung 2-in-1 is its built-in S pen as well as its touchpad, which has the ability to charge Qi-compatible devices. One downside of the laptop, though, is its shortened Shift key, which will take some time to get used to.
You first need to decide what type of 2-in-1 laptop is right for you. If you want a primary computing device for home and work, you should probably go with a laptop that can convert into a tablet, or what we call a bendback 2-in-1. These include the HP Spectre x360 13, Dell XPS 13 and Lenovo Yoga C940.
If you want something more portable or just need a nice display for content viewing, consider buying a tablet that converts into a tablet via a detachable keyboard. In this category are the Microsoft Surface devices and Apple's iPad Pro. Tablets are also great for artists or designers because they typically support a stylus input and aren't as unwieldy as convertible laptops.
Once you've made a choice between tablet or laptop, decide how much power you need. When it comes to specs, we recommend buying a laptop with an 11th Gen Intel U-series or H-series Core i5 CPU, at least 8GB of RAM (16GB is great) and a minimum of 256GB of storage. AMD is coming in hot with its Ryzen 5000 chips, so keep an eye out for those.
Battery life is another key component of any good 2-in-1 laptop. If you plan to take the notebook to class or the library, don't count on there being an outlet! Consider a laptop that gets at least 9 hours of battery life, which should be enough to get you through a couple of classes with enough juice for studies.

The best 2-in-1 laptop we've tested is the Microsoft Surface Pro 8 (2021), a tablet PC with a built-in kickstand and detachable keyboard. With this tablet form factor, you detach the keyboard to make it lighter and easier to hold or to save space. Its 3:2 IPS panel looks sharp and has a 120Hz refresh rate to make pen input feel more responsive. The keyboard feels good to type on, but you need to buy it separately, and the same goes for the stylus. Its 1080p webcam is excellent and among the best on the market, and you also get an IR camera for quick logins via facial recognition. The battery lasts only around seven hours of light use, but luckily, the power adapter is fairly compact, and you can also charge via its USB-C/Thunderbolt 4 ports.
If you want an incredibly compact device to get basic tasks done, like email and web browsing, go with the Microsoft Surface Go 3 (2021). It's also a tablet with a detachable keyboard but includes a 10.5-inch screen. You still get a sharp display that supports pen input, an excellent webcam, and roughly the same battery life as the Pro 8. It's available with an Intel Pentium Gold or Core i3 CPU, which can only handle simpler tasks like emails, video playback, and web browsing. The keyboard feels a bit cramped, so it isn't the best for typing out a long report or essay, and unfortunately, it only has a single USB-C port.
Looking for something a little more modest? Get the Acer Chromebook Spin 714 (2022). This Chrome OS 2-in-1 convertible feels well built, and it's easy to carry around, thanks to its thin and light design. Its 14-inch display gives you enough room for split-screen multitasking, and since it's a 2-in-1, you can flip the screen around and use it as a tablet. The laptop comes with a stylus that you can use to take notes or draw, and you can simply dock it into its charging slot for transport. The keyboard feels spacious and tactile, although it can be slightly tiring over an extended period. As for the touchpad, it's on the smaller side, but the tracking is decent.
Configuration-wise, although this laptop is available with various Intel 12th Gen. CPUs, the Core i5 configuration with 8GB of memory and 128GB of storage seems to be the easiest to find. The Core i5 is plenty fast for Chrome OS and very power-efficient, resulting in all-day battery life. If you're often on video calls, know that it has an outstanding 1080p webcam that's easily among the best on the market. For ports, you get one USB-A, two USB-C/Thunderbolt 4, and an HDMI port.
