I plugged in a thumb drive to my pc, right-clicked on an image, and chose 'Set as desktop background'. The thumb drive was subsequently stolen. Windows obviously creates a copy on the image since it remains as the desktop background even after the thumb drive is removed. My question is, where exactly is this file stored?

The images don't have an extension but paint will open them. The larger files are the wallpapers. Copy the ones you want to another folder and add .jpg. List by date so you know when you get new ones.

In Windows 10 this no longer works. It only returns the first image in the folder, it does not change with the backgrounds as they transition. I need a similar command that returns the path(s) to the current image on the desktop background(s) that actually works in Windows 10 if one exists.

Note on 3rd party apps -When 3rd party apps like John's Background Switcher are used to manage desktop backgrounds (which I used on my older Win10 PC), they typically provide an option to view the current/previous desktop background (if set by the app itself). Check the app's help file to know more.

Windows 10 Personalize Settings shows 5 wallpapers used recently, IF THE ORIGINAL FILES STILL EXIST but, if you set your wallpaper using the Windows 10's Photos app, a copy of the image will be kept in this location (only 1 photo will be kept):

Note that some programs are changing the wallpaper without actually writing a file to disk. This can be done by hooking to the Microsoft Windows Desktop window and drawing directly on its canvas. This is how GIF/AVI animations are drawn on desktop.

The default wallpapers are part of ubuntu-wallpapers- package (e.g. ubuntu-wallpapers-precise, ubuntu-wallpapers-trusty, etc.). Run dpkg -L ubuntu-wallpapers-$(lsb_release -cs) to get the list of wallpaper files.

In the "Appearance" window go to the drop menu above the thumbnails and pick pictures. You will then be able to pick a wallpaper that is not in the "backgrounds" but in the "pictures" folder which is in your home folder. Using the same start, you can also navigate out of the home folder and fish out a wallpaper stored in /usr/share/backgrounds. While the added wallpapers will not show in the "Appearance" window, they are there if you have copied them there (as the owner from terminal)

I have a folder with pictures which I used as wallpapers for years on my debian 10.8 notebook. I'm using XFCE 4.12.5. Since some month I only have a gray background. The only thing I have changed, as far as I remember, was connecting a second display to the notebook. Having no wallpaper on XFCE has been asked at Stackexchange several times, but none of the solutions worked for me. Going to the desktop settings, trying to set a pic as wallpaper via Thunar, "apt install --reinstall xfdesktop4", ... nothing workend.

With a right click on the desktop, choose 'Desktop Settings...' and check which folder is selected.

'desktop-base' I think is the default, set it there if it's not. The pics from an alternate location can be linked into that directory by root.

You can select a different directory, but it seems updates can alter things. I'm not clear in my memory, but I think I've seen an issue like this in the past. I started linking, or simply moving any pic to desktop-base and keep it simple. Utilities that can change desktop image seem to be numerous and problematic over many upgrades, I never narrowed down the issue...

Some other questions:

- which version of xfdesktop are you running ("xfdesktop -V")?

- is this a connection to a local machine or are you remoting in to another computer?

- how are you starting Xfce? Display manager (if so, which one?) or if via init, then can you post your ~/.xnitrc?

Windows 10 includes a nice selection of default wallpapers, but it's easy to lose track of them if you decide to use custom wallpaper. If you'd like to use the default images again, here's how to find and use them.

But, if you decide to use a series of your own wallpapers stored in a custom location and you come back later to change the wallpaper, the defaults will have been pushed out of the five most recent images shown as thumbnails in Settings. Even worse, Windows will not remember where the default wallpaper files were stored when you click "Browse." You'll need to find them again.

Windows 10's default desktop wallpapers are stored in C:\Windows\Web. This folder usually contains subfolders named after different wallpaper themes (such as "Flowers" or "Windows") or resolutions ("4K").

The folder shown in the open dialog will change. You can then navigate through the subfolders to pick the image you'd like to use as your desktop background. When you're done, select the file and click "Choose Picture."

If you'd like, you can also open File Explorer and navigate to C:\Windows\Web, then copy the default image files to a better location---such as the Pictures folder in your User account. You can then find the wallpapers more easily in the future.

If you're a fan of beautiful wallpaper like us, you can search for cool wallpapers online, use Bing's Daily Photos as wallpaper, or even change your wallpaper based on the time of day. And if you run a multi-monitor setup, you can choose a different wallpaper for each monitor. Have fun!

Select Start , then select Settings > Personalization > Themes. Choose from a default theme or select Get more themes from Microsoft Store if you want to download new themes with desktop backgrounds that feature cute critters, breathtaking landscapes, and other smile-inducing options.

Select Start , then select SettingsĀ  > Personalization > Themes. Choose from a default theme or select Get more themes in Microsoft Store if you want to download new themes with desktop backgrounds that feature cute critters, breathtaking landscapes, and other smile-inducing options.

To change the desktop background in Windows 10, follow the same steps outlined above to set your background by opening or right-clicking the file or from Settings > Personalization > Background. To change the background on multiple monitors, right-click the wallpaper and assign it to a particular display.

The folder is sort of hidden, it is not located in the Pictures folder like common sense would have you believe. Instead, you can find the Windows 11 wallpapers in the following directory: C:\Windows\Web\

The Screen folder has 6 wallpapers, though one of these is just a solid color background. The Touch Keyboard directory is home to even more colorful abstract backdrops. The C:\Windows\Web\Wallpaper is sort of a mixed bag and contains several images, some of which are Nature-themed ones, if that tickles your fancy. There are a couple of image sets with different colored versions of the same wallpaper, you can set the operating system to switch between them by enabling the slideshow option. But I should warn you, toggling the setting can have an adverse result in that it can cause screen flickering issues.

Windows 11 only lists the 5 recent backgrounds that you used in the Settings > Personalization screen. So, if you changed wallpapers several times, the Settings app will not display the default backgrounds of the operating system. You will need to browse for them manually, and the folder is not exactly easy to find if you didn't already know about it. That being said, there is a simple way to restore the default backgrounds. All you have to do is to change the theme, and you will get its corresponding image set as your desktop background.

As I mentioned earlier, Windows 11 comes with 6 themes, each of which has its own wallpaper. But keep in mind that there are more backdrops available in the wallpapers folders, so you actually get some extra customization options. By manually changing the wallpaper, you can mix and match the images (including the hidden ones), with the built-in themes of your choice, to keep things fresh.

Having access to the official wallpapers has a few advantages. Let's say that Microsoft decided to remove the wallpapers and replace them with new ones, or edits the current version. You can simply revert to the original backgrounds quite easily. If you have some skill with image editors, you could modify the wallpapers to suit your needs and spruce up your desktop. You may even use the backdrops on your other devices.

If you don't have Windows 11 on your computer but want the wallpapers from it, head over to our previous coverage to download them. Do you like Bing Wallpapers? You can have your desktop wallpaper refreshed every day with the official Bing Wallpapers app from Microsoft, or the third-party program, Bingsnap. If you have an Android phone, you can use a combination of the Muzei Live Wallpaper app, and the Bing Image of the Day add-on, to get a new home screen image every day.

Run is a command dialog app with which you can access folders and files in Explorer. You can find the file for the wallpaper currently on your Windows desktop with a couple of alternative commands. One command will bring up the folder that includes the background, and the other will enable you to open the image in editing software. This is how you can find your desktop wallpaper with both Run commands:

The Run commands above will only find the wallpaper currently on your desktop. However, Windows slideshow themes have multiple wallpapers. If you have a wallpaper slideshow theme set, you can find all its background image files by opening the folder that includes them as follows:

The registry also includes some strings that store the path locations of previously set desktop wallpapers. So, you can find the locations of previously set backgrounds with those strings. To do so, go to the wallpaper registry key: e24fc04721
