I love my cast iron! It is completely non-stick! It sounds like your cast iron pan is not cured properly. Scrub it down with hot soapy water. Dry. Cover it with shortening all over, including the outside and bottom. Place it in the oven on 375F for one hour. (Put a tray or some foil underneath the pan to catch drips.) Voila! Non-stick! Some people prefer oil over shortening but I find the shortening sticks better and you can get a good layer on there whereas oil drips, can get patchy and sticky.
Excellent tried, tested and true. I am currently replacing my frying pans the old teflon ones and have been looking for a while on what to replace them with. THANKYOU I am now getting some xtrema ceramic pans!!!
Great post, helped me very much ?
As you know, I mentioned on my guide to Thai cookware that ceramic can be a healthier, more environmentally friendly alternative to other materials for cooking. There are other non-toxic materials, but ceramic tends to produce the best results if you care about the quality of your food.
Xtrema is a company focusing on crafting 100% non-toxic cookware. The idea is to provide an option for customers who want to keep their food and the environment totally free of chemicals, metals, and toxic fumes.
If I had to recommend one single piece of Xtrema ceramic cookware to buy, it would be the 3.5-quart Versa pot. This pot is really the perfect size for a couple and you can cook a wide range of soups or sauces in it!
Xtrema have been kind enough to give me an exclusive discount coupon code link to share with you guys and girls if you want to try ceramic cookware in your home kitchen. Just click this link and you get 25% off your purchase at the Xtrema website.

The safest cookware materials are cast iron, stainless steel, 100% non-toxic ceramic, glass, and enamel-coated cast iron (cast iron with a glass coating). You can find a variety of pure ceramic cookware pans, surgical-grade stainless steel cookware sets, and cast-iron dutch skillets that make your investments truly last for the long run.
Named as one of the top non-toxic cookware brands on the eco market, Caraway is not only Teflon, PFAS, and heavy metals-free but also very aesthetic. Their range of ethically-made and safe ceramic nonstick coated cookware comes with stainless steel handles and an aluminum core.
Made In certainly deserves a top spot in our safest cookware brands list thanks to their artisan-crafted, non-stick, and non-toxic stainless steel (oven safe up to 800F) and carbon steel cookware (oven safe up to 1200F).
No matter if you are on the hunt for ethical ceramic nonstick coated cookware, stainless steel pots, or the safest cooking pans, the best non-toxic cookware brands will make cooking a whole lot easier (and cleaner). And while some of the safest cookware brands may come with a hefty price tag, there are plenty of affordable oven-safe, non toxic non stick cookware to choose from.
All of my cookware is hand-me-downs. I only use stainless steel, glass, and cast iron cookware in my kitchen. That said, I know that my stainless steel cookware is not the highest quality and I do worry about other metals leaching out into my food. But, outfitting a kitchen with brand new cookwares is EXPENSIVE, and, despite all my research, I had yet to find a brand that I was 100% sold on. There are some really high-quality stainless steel cookware brands that I researched, but I still had lingering concerns about other other metals used in the pan or they were too cost prohibitive for me to buy right now.
Ceramic cookware is an excellent choice for non-toxic cookware. Long-lasting and easy to use, ceramic cookware comes in all shapes and sizes. Some ceramic cookware is made of pure ceramic, and some features a metal such as hard anodized aluminum coated with fire-hardened clay.
Caraway is a bit of a newcomer in the cookware space but the company has carved out a niche with its gorgeous mostly ceramic pots and pans that are truly non-toxic. I asked Caraway for copies of any third-party toxicity testing and they immediately sent documents showing that all their cookware passes with flying colors. No PFAS here, and no lead, cadmium, or other chemicals of concern.
Caraway also pays attention to sustainability by shipping all of its products without any single-use plastics. Instead, it uses recycled and recyclable cardboard and reusable cork trivets. It even helps customers find a local recycling facility for old cookware!
Every shipment is inspected and tested for heavy metals, and Xtrema cookware is FDA-approved and meets California Prop 65 standards, meaning that it is certified free from over 800 problematic compounds. Xtrema cookware is also environmentally friendly as it is created using renewable raw materials and green manufacturing practices.
With Xtrema ceramic cookware, you can cook food easily on a low heat, because pure ceramic retains heat better than other cookware and helps food to cook evenly, inside and out. Just be sure to warm pans slowly and keep temperatures low to moderate (and add you oil after the pan is warmed).
The classic Emile Henry dish is their ruffled tart dish, the unique design of which makes it easy to turn out an excellent pie without needing to grease the dish before baking. The company now makes six main types of cookware, including:
With knowledge, care, and a little luck, Emile Henry cookware could last a lifetime, but do be careful about thermal shock with some items. Classic CorningWare is a better option in terms of durability and strength, but the Emile Henry range, while traditionally made, has a more modern design, similar in some ways to Le Creuset.
It is not really all that hard to find non-toxic pots and pans if you know what to look for. But, many people do not realize that the cookware they use may actually be leaching toxins into their bloodstream. This is especially true for people who are trying to eat clean and think healthy cooking means using non-stick cookware.
When heated to a high degree or scratched during normal cooking, non-stick cookware can release toxins into the food. The use of non-stick cookware could be a reason PFOA can be found in the bloodstreams of 95% of American men, women and children.
Not all ceramic cookware is created equal. The biggest issue is that people think that ceramic coated cookware is healthy. Unfortunately, over a few months of regular use, the ceramic coating begins to chip and break down. This reaction can cause chemicals and leads to be released.
From the research I have done, Xtrema Cookware is truly the greenest and best healthy cookware on the planet. Click HERE to read more about the importance of choosing toxic-free cookware. Here are 4 things you must know before choosing ceramic cookware for your kitchen.
Cooking at high temperatures on metal cookware can cause similar issues while also changing the health profile of your foods. However, 100% ceramic cookware can be using in the stove, for broiling, on the grill top and in the microwave without any chemicals leaching into your foods.
The best part about using Xtrema Ceramic Cookware is that you are using cookware that has been FDA-approved as a renewable raw material. Which means, there is truly only ceramic used in making this cookware.
Incredibly, Xtrema Ceramic Cookware is also chip resistant, every bit as easy to clean as non-stick cookware and ten times more versatile. You can cook with Xtrema on the oven, stovetop, in the broiler, steamer oven, convection oven, and even BBQ grill!
Cookware can leach some concerning chemicals into our food. Because of this, we need to be careful about what we use to prepare our food. I think that cookware is almost like medicine that needs to be prescribed. What someone considers safe cookware for them, might not be healthy for you. Today you are going to learn about the major types of cookware so you can choose the non-toxic cookware that works for you.
This type of cookware usually has a coating of polytetrafluoethylene (PTFE), a slippery polymer discovered in 1938 and trademarked by DuPont as TeflonÂ. PTFE may contain perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and other undisclosed materials.
PTFE may off-gas toxic particulates when it has been heated to 464ÂF. At 680ÂF, it releases at least 6 toxic gases, including 2 carcinogens (PFOA and tetrafluoroethylene (TFE)), 2 global pollutants, and monofluoroacetic acid (MFA), a chemical lethal to humans even in low doses. This makes it evident that non-stick cookware is clearly not non-toxic cookware.
On the other hand, the Vitaclay report contains information about the lab that performed the test, the date of the test, its description, and minimum detectable levels. However, they test only for 4 heavy metals, which is just somewhat helpful. The test report shows that they comply with California Proposition 65. However, a full list of the clay ingredients is not disclosed. And their clay comes from China, where the background levels of pollution are very high.
