RosÃs are not new in the wine world. Winemakers in countries like France and Italy have been making pink wine for centuries, and the style has garnered great reception in countless New World wine regions as well.
With a portfolio of rosÃs that spans hemispheres and decades of winemaking experience under his belt, Roman Roth, partner and winemaker of WÃlffer Estate, sat down with Wine Enthusiast to discuss his expanding pink-wine domain and give his insight on the latest rosà trends.
WÃlffer started producing pink wine long before it was trendy and 2022 marks your 30th year of rosà winemaking. What about the rosà style drew you to start producing it three decades ago?
However, there was a small community of wine drinkers that understood dry and well-made French rosà and WÃlffer Estate did its fair share to help make this a serious category and make it a staple now in the U.S.
Last but not least, I think it was easier for New Yorkers or East Coast wine drinkers to endorse and embrace a local rosà while still keeping face by drinking French or Italian whites and reds. So our dry rosà broke the prejudice and the glass ceiling and became cool. And, with the addition of our Summer in a Bottle Rosà in 2015, even became a cult wine.
You make rosÃs from Long Island, Argentina and now, with the new release of Summer in a Bottle CÃtes de Provence, a pink wine from France has joined your portfolio. What are the differences in style of rosà across the areas?
I have always made rosà by using up to nine different grape varieties of red and white grapes. We believe rosà should be elegant, balanced, dry and playful, but in order to make it a quality wine and to add texture, character and layers, it is important to use different grape varieties that all add something to the wine.
Our style and goal is to make deliberately a dry, elegant, vibrant, food-friendly rosà and it is amazing and a dream to work in three distinct wine regions. However, there are big climatic, soil and altitude differences and the fundamental difference is the use of different grape varieties.
In the last couple of years, the WÃlffer brand, driven by the popularity of our rosà wines, has garnered a big following in the U.S. The owners Marc WÃlffer and Joey WÃlffer, who take a very active part in the success of WÃlffer Estate, together with our CEO Max Rohn and myself, felt that we could bring and offer something very unique to Provence, the heartland of rosÃ. Bringing our passion, our integrity, our style and our unique and stunning packaging and combining all that with the CÃtes de Provence appellation.
We worked diligently for two years to find the perfect grower so that we could compete with quality. The growing, making and bottling is all done in one area and under one roof. All the grapes are even going through three optical sorting machines to ensure only the pure fruit is being used. We wanted to capture the pure and true flavors and characters and not lose them or dilute them with nÃgociant bulk wine purchases or unnecessary pumping and trucking.
Now, making wine in the Hamptons, NY; in Argentina and in France, in addition to our wonderful and innovative dry cider program, is giving us four legs to stand on. It makes the entire estate more sustainable and helps WÃlffer Estate to continue to push forward and take risks. In a time of climate change, this is a very important strategy to ensure that this family-owned winery can continue to flourish in the future.
New York's Long Island wine industry has lost a larger-than-life personality. Christian WÃlffer, the owner of WÃlffer Estate Vineyards who helped bring attention to the region's wines with his aggressive marketing and pursuit of quality, was killed on New Year's Eve while swimming in Brazil. He was 70.
"It's a great loss," said Roman Roth, winemaker at WÃlffer Estate Vineyards. "He was very passionate. When he said he would do something, he always followed through. He'd work twice as hard as anyone else."
The financial investor and winery owner was on vacation in Brazil and attending a lunch party on a beach in Paraty, about 150 miles west of Rio de Janeiro. WÃlffer was swimming when a boat's propeller cut two diagonal wounds across his back. Fellow partygoers rescued him from the water and he was taken to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Local police are investigating and have detained a suspect. News reports said there have been previous complaints about boats traveling too close to area beaches.
Originally from Hamburg, Germany, WÃlffer didn't plan to get involved in wine when he moved to Sagaponack, N.Y. A successful investor who had previously worked for German chemical company BASF and was fluent in six languages, WÃlffer began buying land in 1978 in the Hamptons community for a horse farm, eventually building a state-of-the-art equestrian center on 175 acres of land. He did plant a few Chardonnay vines, however.
WÃlffer was also actively investing in the Argentine wine industry, projects he detailed in a recent visit to Wine Spectator's offices. For one project, he was developing 2,000 acres of land in Mendoza for a winery called Santa MarÃa de los Andes.
Yes, one might be hard-pressed not to find the gilded, floral bottles of rosà at your next summer picnic, and the same held true for the long candlelit dinner table that stretched under the pergola. Here, partygoers were treated to both dinner and a show, thanks to an impromptu musical performance by head winemaker Roman Roth. His song of choice? Fittingly, La Vie en Rose.

Founded in 1988 by Hamburg-born Christian WÃlffer, WÃlffer Estate Vineyard is a vision-casting American winery with a decidedly European character.
