After freezing at home plate, professional baseball player Calvin Campbell retired from the Detroit Tigers and retreated to his hometown in Louisville, Kentucky where he put his life on hold for years to nurse his damaged pride.

Several days later, a heated conversation with a close friend leaves Calvin reaching for the bottle. When Produce finds him incoherent, he takes Calvin's keys, preventing him from attending a job interview with the one Minor League Baseball team willing to give him a second chance. Drunk and jobless, Calvin sinks further into hopelessness and the pain of his selfish actions confronts him head on as his daughter finally admits to giving up on him.

WHERE HOPE GROWS is a faith-based fim about the kind of friendship that comes out of nowhere but changes your life forever. Calvin Campbell (Kristoffer Polaha) was once a Major League Baseball player, but he's now a single alcoholic raising a perpetually disappointed 17-year-old daughter, Katie (McKaley Miller). One day at the local ValuMart, Calvin ends up in a conversation with "Produce" (David DeSanctis), a grocery store clerk with Down syndrome. After Calvin has increasingly chatty interactions with Produce, the two become friends outside of the grocery store, too. As Calvin grows closer to his generous-hearted new friend, he begins to make positive changes (joining AA, going to church) to turn himself from a bitter baseball washout into a productive and protective friend and father.

In WHERE HOPE GROWS, a baseball player fails to make it in the Major Leagues and becomes an alcoholic, but making friends with a Down Syndrome boy restores his hope and faith. WHERE HOPE GROWS is well made and has a strong Christian worldview, but some dark elements warrant caution.

The young man, nicknamed Produce after the department of the grocery store he works in, is never given a real name in the story. Presumably he is rightfully proud of his job and the spiffy apron and nametag that come with it, but it would be considered socially unacceptable to refer to a non-disabled adult by his job description outside of work. (It would also be unacceptable to smash up perfectly good fruits and vegetables in the back lot behind the grocery store where you work, but no one stops Calvin and Produce from doing just that.)

An important theme of this movie is the power of friendship that someone with Down syndrome, or any special needs, is able to help in giving a lesson of hope and courage to someone in need. Through the character of Produce, we see the joy, fun, and happiness that he brings to the character of Calvin.

This week Where Hope Grows joins the list. It's being billed as a film "about finding redemption through faith, hope and love," but while its PG-13 rating points to mature content, the film itself has few revelations to offer, good or bad. It's a watchable yet rather subdued movie that goes down easy enough but has a preaching-to-the-choir quality that results in less-than-surprising storytelling.

The acting in Where Hope Grows is fine, and the production values make the film easy to watch. However, the story, written by director Chris Dowling, who once starred in soap operas The Bold and the Beautiful and Days of Our Lives, just doesn't offer any surprises. It's too easy to see where the film is going. Even a closing-moments revelation is predictable, if moving. Where Hope Grows isn't the kind of movie that feels like an advance for films aimed at Christian audiences, but neither is it a step back. That most surprising thing about it is just how unsurprising it is.

Gouvea spoke at a news conference with fire and law enforcement officials. Shasta County Sheriff Tom Bosenko said authorities found a sixth victim of the blaze at a home that was consumed by flames, though he declined to say where. The victim's identity was not released.

Public education, in trouble everywhere and in crisis throughout New York City, is worse in Harlem, where union rules ensure that the least competent teachers are assigned. As a result, barely 40% of students are performing at or above grade levels. At Junior High School 43, which is fairly representative, class size averages more than 30 students, discipline is hit or miss, books are scandalously lacking and there aren't even enough chairs to go around. Like airlines that overbook, the school counts on absentees. When "too many" students miraculously show up, teachers negotiate among themselves for chairs. Most of this tragedy is due to local budget cuts. One promising program is Teach for America, which trains eager, idealistic college graduates to serve in the nation's most distressed regions. By including Teach for America in his National Service plan (which already has 20,000 Americorps volunteers, more than the Peace Corps ever had), Clinton will add teachers to the classrooms of Harlem.
