When Big Bang Theory executive producer Steve Holland told me earlier this fall that Raj's storyline with a new love interest was going to "play out over the course of the season," I was skeptical. Actually, it was more than that: I was disappointed.
With Sheldon and Amy now wed, Penny and Leonard in their third year of marriage, and Bernadette and Howard managing two kids, I thought pairing up Raj for the final season felt a little like checking off a to-do list. Plus, if the writers wanted a happy ending for Raj, why does that have to mean an engagement or marriage? That's not to say I don't want Raj to find someone or be happy, but I love how relatable the relationships on Big Bang are. And in 2018, it's extremely relatable for romance/love/engagement to take longer for some. So why rush it with Raj?

While I still wish Raj and Anu could have been introduced by their parents without the pressure of it leading to an arranged marriage, I am excited to see where this could go. And apparently it's going to a Valentine's Day 2019 wedding date, which was jarring to hear. (Really, you two? It has to be that soon?) Still, I'm finding myself bored whenever Anu and Raj aren't the focus of an episode. (Case in point: last week's.)
Starting with the moment when Anu matter-of-factly tells Raj they should have sex. He almost runs off the road, but that may be because he's more worried about being naked following a salt-heavy dinner than actually doing it with Anu for the first time. Anu clears things up and says she doesn't mean right now, but it's important to her that they know they're compatible before getting married. Uh, maybe make sure you're compatible before you tell all your friends about a wedding date? But that's just me.
The guys are not much help, so Raj joins Bernadette and Penny for wine time to mull it over. "She's probably nervous too," Penny says. Raj doesn't believe her, but that's not the point. He's worried he's not as skilled as he's made himself out to be in past sexual encounters. Plus, Anu is Indian as well, so she's going to know there's no position called the "screeching lotus." (Oh, Raj.)
The weekend apparently comes very fast because in the next scene, Raj is in the hotel room and having a freakout with Penny over the phone. Penny tells Raj that her first time with Leonard wasn't that great, which is a hilarious nod to Leonard's earlier comments that their first time was so good he plays it over and over in his head. If that was supposed to make Raj feel better, it doesn't.
Anu asks Raj why he didn't tell her this before, but he admits he was embarrassed. Instead of saying "Why?" or "That's ridiculous," she says, "I get it," which both validates his feelings and creates another level of trust between them: "If it makes you feel better, I've got things I'm embarrassed about too." While I was hoping for a profound reveal from Anu, it turns out her "embarrassment" is simply that she doesn't like music. "What kind of music?" Raj asks. "Just all of it," she says.
Raj then says maybe they should wait to have sex another time, but Anu has another plan. "Or, I take a shower and you decide how you want to play this," she says. It takes a confused Raj a minute to realize exactly what Anu is implying until she pops her head out of the bathroom and instructs him, "Take a shower with me, Raj!" He quickly jumps out of bed and joins Anu in the shower.
Young Sheldon, the Big Bang Theory prequel spin-off, follows the life of Sheldon Cooper during his childhood. Just as with The Big Bang Theory, it was very successful but still plans to end its way. The upcoming seventh season will be the last for the show. The show debuted in 2017 following an idea Parsons ran past Big Bang producers, becoming green-lit after a special preview episode received overwhelmingly positive audience feedback. Despite The Big Bang Theory's final season airing in 2019, Young Sheldon kept the story going.
The Big Bang Theory spin-off's sixth season ended in May 2023, and it was renewed for the seventh, which marks the end of that specific story. It managed to garner a strong fanbase of both Big Bang Theory veterans and newcomers, defying the expectations of some critics who believed it would be a short-lived cash-grab project from Chuck Lorre Productions and Warner Bros. Studios when it was first announced. Audiences warmed to the characters introduced in Young Sheldon, and series mainstays like Georgie, Mandy, and Connie "Meemaw" Tucker have proved engaging enough to support six seasons of non-Big-Bang-related stories.
When Young Sheldon returned for its sixth season, there was a whole host of themes to tackle, from George and Mary's marital issues to Georgie and Mandy's unexpected pregnancy. With Sheldon going through puberty being the major narrative of season 6, there were a lot of years Young Sheldon could have covered before Dr. Cooper takes up his post at Caltech in time to meet the permed Leonard as seen in The Big Bang Theory's many flashbacks to his early roommate days.
Young Sheldon isn't the only The Big Bang Theory spin-off, as another one is currently in development. Though details on the upcoming spin-off are scarce, there are still some positive updates. Chuck Lorre, who created the original series, is returning for the spin-off, and given how connected to the characters he is, the project will likely be a faithful follow-up. Instead of looking backward like Young Sheldon, this spin-off could be set after The Big Bang Theory and continue the story after season 12, which would be the perfect replacement for The Big Bang Theory season 13, though another prequel can't be ruled out just yet.
A sequel could solve many of the problems with Young Sheldon and even the plotholes in the main Big Bang Theory series. If the next spin-off is another prequel it could also run into continuity problems and contradict certain elements of Young Sheldon, creating more plotholes. Above all else, there's simply more of a demand to see the beloved adult characters return. The most likely (and most exciting) option is a spin-off focusing on Raj and Howard. The dynamic duo has great chemistry, and Helberg and Nayyar are the likeliest to return.
Even though The Big Bang Theory is over, it hasn't slowed down the former cast's careers in the slightest. Parsons has continued to narrate Young Sheldon and has also appeared in other shows, like The Simpsons and Hollywood. He also starred in the romantic drama Spoiler Alert. After The Big Bang Theory ended, Galecki went back to his roots and returned for the Roseanne spinoff The Conners as David Healy. He's also been in Rings and A Dog's Journey. Bialik was the host of Jeopardy! until leaving that show after the last season, and she also starred in Call Me Kat.
Cuoco (Penny) led The Flight Attendant cast, which earned the actress Golden Globe and Emmy nominations. She also voiced Harley Quinn in the animated series of the same name, and of all TBBT cast members seems to have had the most success outside the show. The actor also stars in the TV series Based on a True Story, which is about a pregnant real estate agent who is obsessed with true crime. Cuoco also appears in the Amazon thriller movie Role Play, which has a similar premise to Mr. and Mrs. Smith.
Helberg (Howard) took a break for a while after Big Bang Theory and reentered the acting world with the musical drama Annette. He also appeared in the film As They Made Us, which was written and directed by his co-star Bialik. Nayyar continued working in television on shows like Criminal: UK and Suspicion. His latest project, Spaceman, is in post-production and drops in 2024 on Netflix. Melissa Rauch (Bernadette) has since made cameos in Robot Chicken and Animaniacs, but her venture with Meryl Streep in The Laundromat stands out. Ultimately, the cast of The Big Bang Theory has effectively moved on since the show's conclusion.
The Big Bang Theory is an American television sitcom created by Chuck Lorre and Bill Prady, both of whom served as executive producers and head writers on the series, along with Steven Molaro. It aired on CBS from September 24, 2007, to May 16, 2019, running for 12 seasons and 279 episodes.[3]
The show originally centered on five characters living in Pasadena, California: Leonard Hofstadter (Johnny Galecki) and Sheldon Cooper (Jim Parsons), both physicists at Caltech, who share an apartment; Penny (Kaley Cuoco), a waitress and aspiring actress who lives across the hall; and Leonard and Sheldon's similarly geeky and socially awkward friends and coworkers, aerospace engineer Howard Wolowitz (Simon Helberg) and astrophysicist Raj Koothrappali (Kunal Nayyar).[4][5] Over time, supporting characters were promoted to starring roles, including neuroscientist Amy Farrah Fowler (Mayim Bialik), microbiologist Bernadette Rostenkowski (Melissa Rauch), and comic book store owner Stuart Bloom (Kevin Sussman).
The show was filmed in front of a live audience and produced by Chuck Lorre Productions and Warner Bros. Television. It received mixed reviews throughout its first season, but reception was more favorable in the second and third seasons. Despite early mixed reviews, seven seasons were ranked within the top ten of the final season ratings, and it ultimately reached the no. 1 spot in its eleventh season. It was nominated for the Emmy Award for Outstanding Comedy Series from 2011 to 2014 and won the Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series four times for Parsons, totaling seven Emmy Awards from 46 nominations. Parsons also won the Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Television Comedy Series in 2011. A prequel series, titled Young Sheldon and based on Parsons' character Sheldon Cooper, aired from 2017 to 2024, with Parsons reprising his role as the narrating adult Sheldon. The third series in the franchise, a sequel series to Young Sheldon titled Georgie & Mandy's First Marriage, is scheduled to premiere in fall 2024, and will follow Sheldon's older brother Georgie and his wife Mandy. 9d9a05e021
