Grind the raw rice either in mixie or grinder to a fine paste. My mom said the consistency should be that of the maavu we use for making kolam. Now since I had no clue what that consistency was, I maintained dosa batter consistency. Mix the maida into the batter and salt and leave it aside. This can be done the previous day also. On the day of making kozhakattai, pour the batter into a kadai(if non stick better, then you will not lose too much batter). Keep stirring till the batter leaves the sides of the pan and rolls up into a ball. At this stage remove from the fire. The next set of steps is optional , keep the ball of maavu in a wet towel and wrap the towel round the maavu. Let the maavu cool down. This helps breaks down any knots that might have formed in the maavu. I did not do this, instead while making the covering, I used to take little batter at a time, knead them nicely so that the knots break and used the matter to make the kinnam(covering).
Make a paagu of the jaggery(melt the jaggery and let it thicken). It should be a thick paagu, when you test with a little in a small bowl of water, the jaggery should automatically turn into a ball. Once the jaggery reaches this stage, put the coconut in it and keep stirring. Put the elaichi powder and a spoon of ghee and turn off the gas. Once the poornam cools down make balls of the poornam and keep it inside the white filling. Now the kozhakattai is ready to be steamed. Place it in the steamer of your choice and steam for about 10 minutes when the kozhakattais will get a glossy appearence. This indicates that the kozhakattais are done ?
Yes, it has a nice tune and I love that tune ? Anyone that is a pro at kozhakattai, I bow down to them. It is such a cumbersome job and to get it perfectly is definitely an art. You are warranted in not being modest ?
Thank you dee! Duly bookmarked. Not sure when I will get around to actually making it. Will definitely let you know how it comes out when I do. The maida in the maavu is a first for me. Guess that helps with the kinnam retaining the shape?
And yes, amma used to make kozhukattai during Thai and Aadi Fridays as well (is aashad month the same as aadi?). My MIL made it last month when she was here and I am kicking myself for not clicking pictures then ? Will try to make it, may be this weekend or so and post it too.
We use the word for toys too and it is also used for the outer cover for Kozhukattai. I have had hits and misses with the ready made flour, so I had my doubts with the flour too. But when I saw my MIL make it effortlessly with the same flour, I know it was me and not the flour ?
Yep, I know that this stuffing is used to make kadubus, you must mean the steamed kind. I guess my mom asked me to put maida in order to help with the making of the covering. And yes, stories definitely reminds us about grandparents.
Amma Ammaayiyamma is a 1998 Indian Malayalam-language film directed by Sandhya Mohan and produced by Somasekharan. On the other hand, Premachandran marries Renuka, a rich woman. She makes nuisance in his family by her mother's order and made Prem out of the family. Maya marries Reghu. But Maya is very hurt by her mother-in-law upon dowry. Can anyone solve these problems?
If it is Amma on screen, It was Manorama then and Saranya Ponavannan now. After having listed out five songs about amma, i feel void that we have not made a single song for the legendary actor Aachi Manorama who has made us cry when she died on screen through decades.
PS: There are many songs such as Amma endru alaikatha uyir illaye from Mannan, Kalayil thinamum kan vizhithaal from New, Neeye Neeye from M.Kumaran S/O Mahalakshmi but those are the ones which glorify Amma and make you feel happy and not essentially move you to tears, atleast that is what i felt and hence excluded.

Coming back after a baby... these are loaded words- there are expectations that society sets on you, expectations that you set up for yourself and a baby that has its own agenda! Physically, mentally and emotionally, there is much to acknowledge and understand for all of us. I have given much thought to what it takes to find the perfect day with a 8 year old and a 18 month old in tow.
1. A perfect day does not exist: If you are wondering if my article is already over, it isn't. A perfect day has long been defined as one of perfect balance between work accomplished, hobbies well done and a cheerful day with family and friends... Ya- read that again. Now you know why a perfect day doesn't exist. If you still think otherwise, ask any new mom/mom-of-toddler!
But here are my sure-shot perfect days. Focus on gaining 10 minutes of a quiet mind everyday, 20 minutes of exercise and 30 minutes of cheerful kids! And then I would sneak in a 40 minute exercise one of those days as a treat to myself. Try it and kick that old definition of a 'perfect day' outta the window!
2. New Normal: You hear a lot about the 'New Normal post pandemic'? Well, it's just that every mom has had as many 'new-normals' as the number of kids she has had. There is no such thing as 'returning' to work; you just find new ways to work out things, work around things, sometimes even a new work thing!
As a performer, this postpartum time has made me reflect on all the work that I engaged with before my pregnancy and weigh out what works for me in MY new normal. And My new normal is different from yours. It's this diversity of work and life that we often prescribe for someone else but rarely for ourselves.
So what is my sure shot New-Normal? Create content that can be done while the toddler naps; and coordinate calendars with the spouse so that you get 'work-time' without 'Amma- Amma- amma-ammammmmmmmmmaaaaaaa'.
3. 'Change is Constant' you've heard. Well, change is also continuously dynamic: If you have a post-partum body, you know that! When my second child was born, it took me a month before I could walk comfortably again. It took me 8 months to be able to strike my foot on the floor comfortably- and I am a Bharatanatyam dancer! At 20 months, I am stronger today than I was a year ago, but I am also trying to constantly understand HOW my body is changing and responding to what I feed it.
So what is my sure-shot change tracker? Well, the idea is to have a long term strength goal, but to keep it flexible. Because- scroll up to point number 1- perfect days don't happen all the time! And to anyone who compares you with another mom, tell them to scoot.
4. Discipline over fatigue: A lesson I remind myself about everyday - to put my phone away a bit more. But then there are days when discipline is elusive because fatigue rules. And so the other thing I also tell myself is to let go a bit and probably watch a movie with the daughter or rhymes with the baby or sneak away and watch something for myself. And on another day, when I have slept more than 5 hours, I will hide the monster-screens from everyone, including myself.
For now, my discipline is this- I commit to my editors the number of articles I will submit. I commit to collaborators on work that I will plan for the next week/month and I commit to my mother all the dance work I plan for. It's easier to have planned commitments for the month that can be spread out on all my 'good work days' rather than plan out each day! One baby step at a time towards a well-charted day, week, month, year. 152ee80cbc
