Volunteer for the William Morris Gallery
Post date: Dec 9, 2011 4:46:46 PM
During 2012 the William Morris Gallery will be presenting a temporary exhibition, 'Morris in Leyton', at the [former] Leyton Municipal Offices [on Leyton High Road, corner of Adelaide Road] as part of its exciting development project. Opening to the public on 31st January for a period of seven months, the exhibition will introduce visitors to William Morris, explore his historical connection to the local area and inform people about the £5.2 million development project to transform the Gallery. The exhibition will feature the spectacular Peacock and Bird carpet designed by Morris & Co. We will also be providing a programme of activities and events to attract local people and encourage them to visit the Gallery when it reopens in July 2012.
We are looking for volunteers to supervise and support visitors to the exhibition, this will include invigilating visitors to ensure their safety and that of the objects on display, welcoming people to the exhibition, answering questions and engaging them in conversations about William Morris and the Gallery. Maybe you have a passion for
Morris that you would like to share with others, or just have some spare time
that you are willing to use to help us. Volunteers do not need experience but do need to be able to communicate with visitors of all ages and levels of interest.
All volunteers will take part in a brief training session on the key aspects of the role, for example health and safety or security, as well as an introduction to the themes of the exhibition. After this volunteers will be working independently or in pairs with minimal supervision. There may also be additional opportunities for volunteers to support the activities and events if they wish. Volunteer sessions will be for a whole or half day on weekdays and/or weekends.
Volunteers should be able to do at least half a day each week but please discuss your availability with us.
The exhibition will be open to the public
Wednesday to Saturday 10.00 - 17.00 with the title
'William Morris: Designer, Craftsman, Local Celebrity'
This is a great opportunity to meet new people, develop new skills, make a really important contribution to the community and do something enjoyable in your spare time. If you are interested in this opportunity or have a question that you would like to ask please contact me at
