PLAYER PROGRESS AWARD
Mark Hartnett [Golf Croquet Handicap and Level Play]
A dominoes night was held on 1st October. 16 people attended and played a total of 20 games each. The winner was Fiona A.
2nd place went to Mike Ho and 3rd to Sue P. A total of £115 was made for club funds. Thank you everyone, and especially Margaret who made the food.
An AC Doubles Tournament Day paired experienced with inexperienced players. The teams comprised Sue and Colin P, Mike H and John A, Rob H and Fiona A, and the two Phils, H and B.
The teams played short croquet, the recommended starter form for players learning the game or brushing up old skills.
The first round winners went through to play each other in the final, which was contested by Rob and Fiona versus the two Phils. A runners-up game was played by the two losing pairs, for 3rd place.
1st place went to the two Phils with 8 hoops. 2nd were Rob and Fiona. 3rd went to Mike and John, who beat Sue and Colin. Well done everyone for taking part in a season when players have been encouraged to have a go at AC.
7 games went to the Golden Hoop in a closely contested final match of the season on 10th September for Westmorland's Level Play league team.
At the start of the final round a draw was still on the cards for Westmorland whose team were only 2 games behind after 15 had been played.
However the home team of Bury Sovereigns completed a victory winning 2 of those final 3 games.
Friday 5th September saw Westmorland's Level Play GC team of John Armer, Mark Hartnett and Robert Harvey (total handicaps of 18) take to the Levens Hall lawns against the visiting Chester Chariots team (total handicaps of 10). On paper, Chester started as favourites.
With a mostly dry sunny day ahead, play started promptly with both teams eager to play. At lunch with 9 games completed the score was W4 CC 5. After lunch play continued and Westmorland levelled the score and moved ahead.
As the final round began, with 3 games to play, the score was W9 CC 6 so for the home team a draw would be the worst outcome.
At the close, the final score was WCC 10 CC 8. As the final winning game result came in the Red arrows flew overhead in great formation [sadly no photo].
A well-earned drink followed. Well done all.
On Saturday 30th August 5 of this year's new starters at Golf Croquet gathered to play a handicap competition. Elizabeth Maidment won all of her games and so became the overall winner.
The next day a day event was held for GC players with handicaps under 7. Robert Harvey emerged the winner.
In the September raffle, drawn on September 3rd, Colin Pritchard won a lunch box with drinks bottle, and Les Bye won a liquid diffuser.
On Wednesday 3rd a team of 3 AC players travelled to play at Keswick in the final match for the Cumbria Tankard, and with Norman being the only winner of the afternoon the team unfortunately came home the losers by 2 matches to 1.
The end-of-season awards lunch is to be held on Sunday 9th November at Crooklands Hotel, at which the final raffle of the season for Margaret's Xmas Cake will be held.
Norman Winter reports:
John Armer [handicap 5] overcame Roger Brooks [hcp -2] in an exciting finish to take the Level Play Block trophy in a play-off on Thursday 28th August.
All 3 final block games were played in sequence. John beat Norman 7-4, followed by Roger also beating Norman, this time by 7-5. This meant that the match between Roger and John became the decider.
Roger appeared to be coasting to a win, playing in an assured manner as the score stood 4-2 after 6 hoops. After a further two hoops the gap remained the same, with Roger ahead 5-3.
The face of the game then changed as John won 3 hoops in a row and moved ahead to a 6-5 lead. Roger played his ball into the jaws of hoop 12, guaranteeing he would draw level. With the scores even at 6-6 John played an excellent approach shot to hoop 13, leaving Roger unable to find a way to prevent John running the hoop at the next opportunity and emerging a very happy winner.
Fiona Armer reports:
Ten club members took to the lawns for an internal competition held on Tuesday 26th August. 9 of the members were handicaps of 10+, while a 10th player was <7 and agreed to play for 9 hoops in every game whilst everyone else played to reach the standard 7 hoops.
After playing 5 games each the running order was scores were as follows:
Diana 34 points
Mark Ha. 33 points
Hilary and Mark Hu 30 points
Jacqui 29
Sue F 28
Neil M 27
Christine 27
Brenda 26
Colin 24
The day started with odd showers but went on to be very warm and sunny. Well done everyone. A great day for all.
[Participants expressed their appreciation to Fiona for the effort that had gone into this enjoyable and successful day event.]
Norman Winter reports:
Penrith, or to give them their full name Penrith and North Lakes Croquet Club, went into their final Cumbria Tankard match of the season having secured victories ove both Crake Valley and Keswick. Westmorland's team of 5 players - Mike Hodgson [Captain], Sue Pritchard, Robert Harvey, Roger Brooks and Norman Winter - travelled to Penrith's Langwathby lawns hoping to dent the home club's prospects of a Cumbria Grand Slam.
Westmorland came close to achieving their goal but Penrith were eventually too dominant on the Short Lawn. Roger and Norman both made reasonably quick work of their full lawn matches, winning 26-9 and 26-4 respectively. But their teammates were having a harder time of it. The doubles match in which Mike partnered Rob was lost by the narrowest of margins 10-11, and Sue lost her singles.
With two wins on the full lawn, Westmorland had 3 players playing the second round of short lawn singles and just two wins required for victory. But it was not to be Westmorland's afternoon. None of the matches went to completion, and all went to full time. Robert stuck doggedly to the task and won 11-8 but it was not to be Sue and Mike's afternoon, with both losing their matches.
Westmorland now travel to Keswick on September 3rd hoping to salvage their pride and to avoid the Cumbria Wooden Spoon.
The August raffle prize of a small picnic bag and drinks bottle was won by Margaret B. Diana B won a bottle of wine.
Norman Winter reports:
Westmorland completed their Short Lawn AC season on Monday 11th August, a day which dawned at Levens rather wet, drizzly and overcast, and evidence on the lawn of a very healthy earthworm population, but gradually cleared to a very pleasant sunny afternoon. As the grass dried out the balls ran faster, posing something of a challenge judging the longer shots to stay within the lawn boundaries.
The visiting team from Bury were seeking to further a very solid season of good results. The first round of games went to Westmorland and the second was shared equally, so at the lunchtime halfway point things lay slightly in the home team's favour, 5-3. Honours were again equally shared in the round following lunch, so the result was undecided as the final round was played. Westmorland ended with a flourish, winning all 4 contests and claiming a very convincing 12-4 victory in what had been in fact a quite close-fought encounter.
Westmorland's leading position in the league does not assure them of being 2025 overall winners since other clubs with matches still to play are close on their heels, with Bowdon the favourites having won all but one of their ties.
The team on 11th Agust comprised Mike Hodgson [captain], Sue Pritchard, Robert Harvey and Norman Winter.
Mike Hodgson reports:
Westmorland presently hold top spot in the NW short lawn league. On Thursday August 7th the team travelled to Earby to play Pendle and Craven. The match started in wet conditions but the weather improved as the day progressed and the team of Mike Hodgson [Captain], Sue Pritchard, Roger Brooks and Phil Hyman set about their task against a strong Pendle side.
Round 1 was an evenly played contest with Mike and Phil winning their games to keep the score level at 2-2. Rounds 2/3 were a disaster as Westmorland only managed to win two games out of possible eight. Hence the team entered the final round 8--4 down with only a draw possible. Westmorland took up the challenge and some determined croquet was played but unfortunately after a hard contest Westmorland won only 3 out of 4 games, losing overall 9-7.
Fiona Armer reports:
Westmorland travelled to Southport on 5th August for a Golf Croquet handicap league match on a very windy but dry and mostly sunny day.
The day had lots of close games. However the final score ended in disappointment for the Westmorland visitors, while Southport Hawks playing on home turf were clear winners, with a margin of 14-4.
Fiona Armer reports:
Saturday 2nd August saw Crake Valley visit Westmorland for a local derby in the Handicap golf croquet league.
On a dry hot sunny day play got under way with the 2 double games. Crake took both games.
The next 8 games saw fortunes turned, with Westmorland winning 7 out of the 8 games. The score at lunch time stood at 7-3. For the home team.
After a relaxed and friendly lunch play resumed. 2 games each in the first round, and the score at W9 C5. A draw at least was guaranteed.
The last set of 4 games were played with Crake making a comeback, taking 3 of the games. The final score was Westmorland 10 Crake Valley 8.
In the Afternoon Brenda came to support the team and supplied the interval drinks and help clear up. Hospitality is an important part of these encounters between our clubs. Thankyou Brenda, and well done to everyone.
Fiona Armer reports:
Today, July 17th, we entertained 10 ladies from the Osmotherly and Mansrigg WI groups.
The ladies came ready to tackle the lawns some having played croquet before and others who had not.
Chairman Mike, along with Christine and Fiona, guided the ladies through the various golf shots and rules. There was a lot of laughing going on, which was good to hear. After serving them with tea and coffee hopefully they all went home to spread the word about croquet.
Thank you to everyone who helped set out and clear away.
Sue Pritchard reports:
The team of Sue Pritchard, Rob Harvey, Phil Hyman and Roger Brooks with handicaps of 4, 4, 3.5 and 4 peels respectively, played a short lawn croquet match against Bowdon Wekkenders, a very good team with similar handicaps of 3.5, 3.5, 3, and 2 peels.
Westmorland were delighted to win 11/5. Once again Roger was unbeaten, and with Phil and Rob winning 3 games of their 4. Only 2 games in the match did not finish before time was called. Is that a record for Westmorland? All in all it was a lovely day, with lovely weather and a good crowd.
Fiona Armer reports:
On Wednesday 9th July the Level Play golf team visited Chester to take on the Centurions team.
The team of Roger Brooks, Mark Hartnett and John Armer took on strong opposition.
With 18 games to play over the day, the Westmorland team were trailing at lunch time 6-3. After a further 7 games the score was level at 8 all. So it proved a very close match, which came down to the last 2 games. Both of which were very close and even going to the Golden hoop. Sadly Chester took both games to win on the day CC 10 WCC 8.
Well done all.
The raffle for July was drawn on 8th July:
1st Mark Hartnell: Paint your own Pot and Candle / night light holder
2nd Neil Marland: Bottle of red wine
Fiona Armer reports:
Tuesday 1st July started off warm, though dull and overcast. Perfect weather for playing. Thankfully the forecasted rain held off until all games had finished. Westmorland fielded a team of John and Fiona Armer, David Snaith and Sue Farrell playing against a Fylde team who came out strongly and took both the double matches.
Westmorland recovered from the early setback and after 8 single games had been played the score was 5 all.
Refuelled after lunch once again Fylde took the lead and were W6 F8. Still with all to play for in the last 4 games, Fylde kept the lead and won W 7 FF11.
Despite the home defeat it was a really good day with a lot of very good play. Well done to Sue who won 3 of her 4 singles.
Photos from the Festival weekend at Southport, June 28-29
Fiona Armer reports:
5 Members from Westmorland entered into the level play and handicap golf competitions at the North West Festival of Croquet, a large-scale event held annually on the lawns of Southport Croquet Club.
Teams from all over the North West attend and enter into the spirit of the Festival. Friendships are made and renewed.
All teams have specific colours, and with Westmorland sporting items of black the 2 day event began.
John A and Mark Hu entered the Level play with 7 games over the weekend lasting up to 90 minutes each. The battle was on.
There was very strong opposition and although the games went down to the wire Westmorland kept losing at the last hoop.
Hilary Hu, Colin P and Fiona A entered the Handicap golf and switched in and out over the weekend, with the team winning 4 out of 7 of the 90 minute games and coming close in the others.
The Handicap team came equal 2nd in the event.
The Crake Valley Cumbria Tankard team together with the Westmorland team
Mike Hodgson reports:
Westmorland had a tough Cumbria Tankard game against Crake Valley on Monday 23rd June, only being able to field a side of 3 AC players. The format of the game consisted of one 26 point full lawn, and four short lawn games, played in the afternoon.
Westmorland's team comprised Mike Hodgson [captain], Sue Pritchard and Roger Brooks. The Crake side included two former Westmorland players, namely Jim Alcock and Simon Robins, with the club's third player a relatively new player, Colin Dykes.
The weather was good with sunshine along with the occasional shower, and windy. The first round of short lawn paired Jim against Sue, Jim winning 14--8, and Mike playing Simon in a very close game with Simon pegging out with a minute to spare, the result 14-11. After a short braek the second round got under way with Sue playing Simon, and this time Sue played very well and won 14-3. Mike had a tough encounter with an old rival, Jim, and although Mike was in the lead for most of the game, an unfortunate error on Mike's behalf let Jim in to complete the game, Mike losing 14-7.
Roger again played exceptionally well against Colin, giving away 15 bisques. He seemed to have a hopeless task but stuck to his goal. After Colin played most of his bisques he only required one hoop with each ball. Roger had taken his first ball round to peg, and was left with a complete round to complete to win the game. As usual starting from hoop one Roger did a complete round to peg out and win. Unfortunately the overall result still went in Crake's favour, 3-2.
This was a Cumbria Tankard game and Westmorland still have Penrith and Keswick to play.
Fiona Armer reports:
26 people turned up for the Garden Party kindly held at the home of Robert and Liz H.
Sadly the day was not the best for weather but with lots of space indoors, plenty of games set up around the house meant we could still carry on.
Matching Pairs, a garden quiz, Connect 4, Hoopla, Stack the Bottle Tops, and to finish off Tie the String to Make the Longest Thread. Plus others.
A splendid buffet was prepared by Burneside Bakery with more than enough to spare.
A great afternoon all round. Thank you once again for all the work.
And Fiona got a NOT BAD for the way she stacked the dishwasher from Rob the master dishwasher filler. (We had been shooed away from clearing up all afternoon but Fiona snuck in and filled a load)
Mike Hodgson reports:
Mike, Sue and Roger travelled to Chester on Monday 16th June to play Chester at Short Lawn. The game was played in perfect conditions. Westmorland, in top form at the moment, won 5--4.
Roger won his three games, Mike won two and unfortunately Sue failed to win a game. The match was a very close encounter and could have gone either way. Roger, in fine form, had a scare in the last game with his opponent on peg and hoop five, had to peel his last ball to win with his opponent aware of the situation and playing an extremely defensive game to make thinks difficult for Roger. But she failed to hit in. Roger applied his skills to secure the game and a win for Westmorland.
Fiona Armer reports:
Thursday 12th June saw Westmorland travel to Crake Valley. A team of John Armer, David Snaith and Mark Hartnett versus Chris Williamson, Frank Sharps and Graham Jowett. Each player had to play the opposition twice. Many games went to golden hoop with Crake having the lead all day. Final score Westmorland 4, Crake Valley 14
Mike Hodgson [captain] reports:
On Monday 9th June Westmorland Short Lawn team entertained Fylde from Blackpool. The weather was perfect and Levens Hall Lawns looked the best we have had for this time of year, playing true and quick.
Fylde arrived early and following coffee and introductions we made an early start. Fylde had an evenly split handicap side ranging from 3 to 10 against our Westmorland side with a range from 3peels to 7.
The first four games were very evenly matched resulting in a 2-2 score line for the first four games. The second four games however was a different story
with captain Mike the only winner. Westmorland were losing.3--1. After an early lunch the score line for the next four games was reversed with Mike this time the only loser.
So into the last four games the match was all square at 6--6, with everything to play for. Roger was the first to succeed with a quick 14--0 win. Mike followed suit with a 14--6 win. Unfortunately Sue had a nightmare of a game losing 14-1, and Robert fighting to the death losing 14--6.
In the end it was probably a fair result of 8-8, a draw.
19 club members turned out on Wednesday 4th June for the club’s annual Fun Day, organised as usual by Fiona Armer.
Fun Day is expected to be fun, of course, but also a great chance to practice skills and several ingenious skill games were set up around the lawns: Obstacle Course, Bullseye, Run the Ball Down the Gutter and Through the Hoop, 18 Hoop Challenge, Jump Shots, and Straight and Angled Hoop Running.
With the results quite close it was all down to the final game - Last Man Standing, for at that stage the coveted Broken Mallet trophy was open to any one of 10 players.
In the end John A felled all other contestors (not literally!) and was indeed the last man standing and so won the day with 98 points.
Runner up was Bill Patten with 95 points. David Snaith and Francis Tidmarsh shared equal third place. Well done everyone.
The raffle was drawn on 3rd June. Norman was the winner of a bottle of fizz, and Brenda won a box of biscuits.
Fiona Armer, captain, reports
Westmorland's team of John Armer, Mike Hartnett, Rob Harvey and Fiona Armer played a handicap league match on 31st May, at Pendle and Craven Croquet Club.
The day was mixed, with an even start of 3 all after 6 games. In the next 4 games Pendle pulled ahead 6/4.
The next set of games saw Westmorland trying to pull back, ending with 8/6 to pendle.
With everything to win or lose in the final 4 games Westmorland went out fighting . However Pendle kept landing the balls in the hoops and slamming the opposition away every time.
The final score was Pendle 11 Westmorland 7.
Christine and Bill, winners of the trophy on GC Doubles Day
Players at Levens Hall on Saturday 17th May for the GC Doubles tournament
Fiona Armer, tournament organiser, reports
Saturday 17th May saw 14 players attending the lawns for a Golf Croquet Advantage Doubles competition. The day was beautiful with clear blue skies and warm sunshine.
Play got going at 10am and continued until 3pm, when after the final block match ended a clear winner was declared.
1st Place went to Christine and Bill with 28 points scoired, and 17 scored against them.
The final placings were:
Equal 2nd place: John and Debbie with 27 points and 17 against, and Rob and Jacqui with 27 points and 23 against.
4th David M and Dianawith 24 points and 25 against
5th Mark G and Marysia with 22 points and 26 against
6th Sue P and Brenda with 20 points and 26 against
7th Bob and Colin with 16 points and 28 against
Mike Hodgson, Captain, reports
On Saturday 10th of May Westmorland played Short Lawn away against Llanfairfechan in North Wales. The conditions were perfect and Westmorland fielded a reduced team of 3 players due to travel distance.
The Westmorland team of Mike Hodgson, Sue Pritchard and Roger Brooks arrived at the lawns on Saturday morning after a local overnight stay. They were confronted with an opposition of players with very high handicaps, averaging 10, playing on their pristinely cut lawns provided by their new Dennis mower. Westmorland had quite a challenge but stuck to their task very well.
The first round of 3 matches went in Westmorland's favour 2--1. There was a similar result to the next 3 matches giving Westmorland a lead of 4-2 going into the final session. Westmorland required 1 match to win the fixture. After Roger and Mike failed to win their games, this led to a nerve-racking finish relying on Sue to pull us through. She produced the result we required, winning 14-9, allowing Westmorland to be successful winning 5-4 overall.
Westmorland played very well, losing some games by just one hoop. Our next challenge is against Fylde, at the top of the league. We hope we can retain our winning streak.
Fiona Armer reports
On Tuesday May 13th, a beautiful warm sunny day, Westmorland entertained the visiting team from Bowdon in a handicap advantage golf match. Both teams came out fighting and playing well, and after a lot of close-run games the overall score ended on Westmorland 3, Bowdon 15.
Fiona Armer reports
Twelve individuals competed for the 25th Lancashire Open Golf Croquet Tournament managed by Paul Rigge. It was an international affair with 2 from Lithuania, 1 from Ireland and 1 from Malta, and players from Leighton-Linsdale to Penrith. Our own Westmorland member John Armer entered. Play started on Saturday 26th April and continued on Sunday.
The first day's play was slow, with the players coming to grips with fast running lawns and tight hoops. One game took 1hr 40mins to complete. John got through the blocks into the quarter-finals.
Sunday's play started at 9.10am after a warmup. The manager decided the quarter-finals would be a single game of 19 points, to enable the final to start by late afternoon. The quarter-finals began, withHoward from Penrith taking on John. Howard playing on a 3 handicap won 10/6.
Congratulations to the ultimate winner Ross Bagni who won through with 7/4, 7/4.

David Snaith, John Armer and Mark Hartnett, with combined handicaps of 19, took on 3 of Southport's finest, with total handicaps of 11.
Each player would play his opponents twice on the day making a total of 6 games per person.
Both teams were fighting hard throughout the day with 5 games going to the golden hoop and four games ended 7/5. A lot of tension in the air and excellent play.
The day ended with Southport winning by 11 games to 7.
A good home performance against strong opposition, in the most demanding of GC's formats.
Fiona Armer reports:
Saturday 19th April saw the Handicap Golf team of John Armer. David Snaith, Mark Hartnett and Mark Gregory visit Whitehead Park at Bury.
The day set off with 2 doubles matches leaving the teams even at 1-1.
Singles matches followed. After the next 4 matches the teams remained level at 3-3.
Westmorland crept ahead in the 3rd set, WCC 6, Bury 4.
Westmorland then took all the next 4 matches pulling into a clear lead of W10-B4.
That secured victory for the Westmorland visitors. Shariung the honours in the final round, Westmorland returned home the winners, with a superb 12 games to 6 win.
Well done to all players. David Snaith deserves special mention as Westmorland's Man of the Match, winning all of his games.
Norman Winter reports:
On 11th April WCC welcomed visitors from Southport to play the first league match of the 2025 season.
A day's play in pleasant sunshine once early mist had dispersed was in sharp contrast to the start of the 2024 season, when water-logged lawns caused the cancellation of our first match.
Southport fielded a team with handicaps ranging from ½ to 9, while WCC players ranged from 3P to 7. A player with a handicap of 1P, 2P or 3P has extra difficult shots required to complete their game. Only the best players are in this range. Such a spread of handicaps almost always leads to interesting matches and so it turned out. That's all part of the entertainment of croquet, where unpredictability combines with skill in the outcome of matches.
Fortune and skills combined to leave home captain Mike Hodgson a happy man at the end of the day, with 4 out of 4 possible wins. Roger Brooks won 3 of 4, as did Rob Harvey. Norman Winter came out even with 2 matches won and 2 lost.
Those individual results all added to Westmorland winning the overall match with a comfortable margin of 12-4.
Fiona Armer reports on this social event and fundraiser:
Thursday 13th March saw 17 members and friends attend Holgates bowling/skittles alley. A fun morning was had followed by many members staying for a very hearty meal.

The ladies leader was Alison M followed by Sue F and in third place Fiona. Well done everyone.
Due to reduced charges the club gained £125.
Fiona Armer reports on this social event and fundraiser:
