Winter is here!

Seasonal Parking Bans: Sign up for email notifications at and be the first to know when a parking ban is declared or when a residential blading cycle begins. A seasonal parking ban on designated bus routes will be in effect when there is a significant snowfall that requires the plowing of major roadways. A minimum of eight hours notice will be given.

Neighbourhood Blading: Once snow has accumulated in neighbourhoods, the City sends out crews to blade the roads down to a five cm snow pack. Like garbage collection, neighbourhood blading operates on a weekly schedule throughout the winter. Find your snow day and check blading progress at

Community Sandbox: Pick up your free sand at the box located on 165 St along the fence near the Community Garden. Remember to bring your own container.

Future of Outdoor Rinks

Recently, there was an article in the Edmonton Journal about mature neighbourhoods closing their skating rinks. The article reported “In March, the LaPerle members decided to close (the rink) indefinitely, around six years after the neighbouring Aldergrove community did the same.” “While there are efforts underway in some communities, like Strathcona and McLeod, to expand community rinks, another problem for some areas is a lack of young families to maintain the rinks, and children to justify their use.”

There are many reasons why communities are closing their rinks but the biggest ones for us are the high cost to maintain the rink and the lack of interest from residents to use it. Last winter, we had about 6-9 people use our rinks all evening. Some nights, no one was skating. Of those that were using the rink, very few skaters were West Meadowlark residents.

How can we encourage our residents to use the rink more? How do you use the rink? What can we change? We would like to hear from you because one day, we may be closing our rink for good just like LaPerle and Aldergrove.
