West Meadowlark

Dear Neighbors,

The West Meadowlark Community League (WMCL) would like to welcome new residents to the community and say hello to our existing residents. It is the league’s mission to continue to build our community by offering social and recreational activities for residents by facilitating affordable wellness and recreational options. To connect and share information and to be the voice for the residents of West Meadowlark Park in civic issues.

What does the WMCL do for the community? The board and its members have put in time and effort to bring about the new playground, spray park, community garden space, skating rinks, community events like BBQs, breakfast with Santa, zumba and so much more.

This would not be possible without the dedication of many volunteers both of the Board and Community Members. Unfortunately several of our board members have stepped down or are stepping down in May and we need your help to continue to provide these services.

We are accepting all levels of experience and expertise as we can mold our league around the talents we possess. So please check out our website for positions you may be interested in and contact us through our email or phone number. Come join us online May 5th 7:00 PM via zoom for our Annual General Meeting. You will need to contact us for the zoom link.

Again, without your help the league and all it has to offer will cease to exist.

Bill Williams,

Vice President

West Meadowlark Park is a residential neighbourhood in west Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. The area was originally part of the Town of Jasper Place and became a part of Edmonton when Jasper Place amalgamated with the City of Edmonton in 1964. The neighbourhood is bounded on the west by 170 Street, on the east by 163 Street, on the south by 87 Avenue and on the north by 95 Avenue.

The West Meadowlark Community League (WMCL) was incorporated in 1968 and the community hall was built in 1969. WMCL has a fully accessible playground footprint (no sand), basketball standards, shaded picnic structure, spray park and maintains a hockey rink and social skating rink in the winter. We started a community garden in 2017 and celebrated our 50th anniversary in 2018.

The community has 2 elementary schools (Annunciation Catholic School and Afton School of the Arts) and 2 high schools (St. Francis Xavier Catholic High School and Jasper Place Composite High School). Residents of West Meadowlark Park can access West Edmonton Mall and the Misericordia Hospital is within our boundaries. West Meadowlark Park is also home to a wonderful array of recreation and sports facilities. City run facilities in our neighbourhood include the Johnny Bright Sports Park, the Jasper Place Leisure Centre (currently closed for renovations until the end of 2019), the St. Francis Xavier Sports Centre and the Bill Hunter Arena.

Volunteers are always needed. Help your community, help yourself! Get involved!

Message from the president - 2021

Hello residents and friends of West Meadowlark,

Despite the many challenges we are facing right now by the current COVID19 pandemic, myself and the league's board of directors continue to do what we can to support the community by keeping our neighbourhood a safe and viable place to live. We have a committee in place to work on the speeding and traffic short-cutting in our neighbourhood. If you are interested in becoming involved, please email us for more information.

Although we are very limited in resources/volunteers at this time, we are continuing to do the best we can by engaging our community on a virtual platform.

Our priority right now is the safety of our community members and city and country as a whole. Based on the direction from the Alberta government, the Chief Medical Officer and the City of Edmonton, the WMCL has closed our building and ALL programs and rentals until January 2021. We will reevaluate the situation mid December.

During this time, we will continue to maintain the building and take the opportunity to do some repairs to the facility. We will ensure a proper cleaning of the facility, to ensure it is properly disinfected upon its reopening.

We live in a wonderful community. We encourage our residents to check in on your neighbors. Particularly those neighbors who may be in isolation and those requiring extra support for their daily needs. We encourage you to do so while following provincial safety protocols.

If you are someone who is requiring a little extra help right now, please connect with us via email at westmeadowlark@gmail.com or by phone at 780-484-6132 (leave a message)

Your President, Greg Jober
