The opening feature introduces the 'Obscure Hero' concept and sets the entire world, introducing concepts and theories.  The probe symbolizes the effects of nature and natural phenomena in shaping the world and our perception of our place in the world.  In this capacity the probe represents the inner judge, or analytic accuser, the oedipal complex itself in its scanning for weakness; in this case the weakness is our own history and theology.  

The probe is searching for this in our minds and our sense of the cosmos, and existence, but cannot find the source or purpose of our technology.  

Žižek emphasizes the role of misdirection and "red herrings" in both detective stories and the human psyche. The obvious clues often lead to false conclusions, while the true solution lies in paying attention to the seemingly insignificant details, the "symptoms" that betray the underlying truth.

In Lacanian terms, the "symptom" is not simply a sign of illness but also a clue to the subject's unconscious desire. The detective, like the analyst, must learn to read these symptoms to uncover the hidden truth.
