Join us on an exhilarating seven-day 4x4 guided self-drive adventure from Cape Town to Alexander Bay, journeying through South Africa’s rugged and breath-taking West Coast. This guided tour combines the thrill of off-road driving with the rich cultural history and stunning landscapes of the region. From the charming fishing village of Paternoster to the remote escarpments of the Richtersveld, you’ll experience iconic destinations, vibrant wildlife, and renowned seafood feasts. Highlights include traversing sandy coastal tracks, exploring historic shipwrecks, and visiting diamond-mining towns along the Atlantic coast. On this seven-day Cape Town to Alexander Bay tour, expect thrilling off-road drives, stunning coastal landscapes, and riveting experiences in the unique culture and natural beauty of South Africa’s West Coast. You’ll navigate sandy trails, explore historic shipwrecks, dine on fresh seafood, and visit historic diamond-mining towns.
This all-inclusive adventure covers all meals and comfortable 3 to 4 star accommodations as listed, so all you’ll need is a reliable 4x4 vehicle and a warm jumper for the cool coastal evenings. Just bring your sense of adventure, and get ready for a journey filled with spectacular scenery, local insights, and unforgettable memories.
DAY 1
DEPARTURE PATERNOSTER
We gather in Paternoster at 9 a.m. over a coffee and a chance to get acquainted with everyone on the trip while your guide, Alan share meeting briefs with you. (Coffee included) Paternoster is known for its picturesque fishing boats and scenic beaches and lends a quaint and authentic West Coast experience. Please contact your booking agent or guide for pre departure accommodation options in Paternoster, we can assist you with special rates at the FaRR Out Guest house in Paternoster, an iconic 4 star B&B accommodation facility with luxury ensuite rooms and delectable breakfasts to boot.
After our Meet & Great, we depart at nine o'clock, first heading to Tietiesbaai and then we drive through the larger Paternoster Park and then onto St. Helena Bay. From there, we continue to Dwarskersbos and further on to Elands Bay. We slowly make our way towards Lamberts bay where we dine at the renowned Muisbosskerm Seafood Restaurant, situated smack bang on the beach.
This open-air seafood restaurant is legendary for its all-you-can-eat spread, with freshly prepared seafood cooked over open fires, all enjoyed under simple shade cloth with rustic bench seating. (Meal included)
After dinner, we end the evening with a stay at our B&B accommodations for the night in Lamberts bay.
Day 2
After breakfast we start our day by shifting our vehicles into 4x4 mode to take on the Dunes 4WD Trail (4X4 Trail Included). These sandy dunes provide a fantastic introduction to driving in thick sand, with our experienced guide, Alan to asssit. Don’t hesitate to ask questions, his knowledge is invaluable, and you’ll pick up useful tips for sand driving and general 4W-Driving.
After our dune experience, we continue north to Strandfontein, where we enjoy a late lunch/Dinner in the Kommetjie restaurant also situated right on the beach. Strandfontein, is a serene coastal village known for its, pristine beaches, and laid-back atmosphere. Popular among holidaymakers, it offers breath-taking views of the Atlantic Ocean, making it ideal for beach walks, and sunset photography. Strandfontein is also a gateway to outdoor activities like fishing, hiking, and exploring the nearby Namaqualand during wildflower season. Its charm lies in its tranquility, natural beauty, and warm community vibe, making it a perfect getaway for nature lovers.
After dinner we head over to our next sleep over destination at the Melkboomsdrift B&B, nestled between Vredendal & Lutzville. A 4 star accredited bed & breakfast and self catering, accommodation with beautiful views over the Olifantsriver.
After a coffee and a relaxed evening in front of the fire pit, we settle into our comfortable beds, ready for a brand new exciting and adventure filled day!
Day 3
After a full breakfast, (Included) we set off further north along the West-Coast toward our next destination, Hondeklip Baai. Today’s route takes us over long, sandy tracks that offer incredible coastal views and a true sense of the rugged beauty of the West Coast.
The sandy tracks require a bit of manoeuvring, making the drive challenging but deeply rewarding as you soak up the untamed landscape. (Lunch Packs Included)
The drive to Hondeklip Baai is rather long over two-wheel sandy tracks but the beauty of the ocean on your left and sand dunes on your right makes up for it for sure. We stop off at spots like the Spoeg-revier caves and general photo opportunities alike.
Upon arriving in Hondeklip Baai, we dine at the well-known Rooi Spinnekop Restaurant where our hosts Louis & his lovely wife will wow us with their celebrated locally inspired dishes. (Dinner Included)
We’ll rest up in our designated accommodations, preparing for tomorrow’s exciting excursions. (Accommodations included)
Day 4
Today, we’re diving into the secrets of the West Coast. After an early breakfast, we set out on a guided tour led by a local expert with unmatched knowledge of the area’s shipwrecks and unique flora. Our excursion will take us to explore nine shipwrecks that are scattered along or just off the coast. Dudley’s in-depth knowledge of both the wrecks and the succulents that thrive in the area will make this a fascinating experience. (Lunch Packs Included)
Following our shipwreck exploration, we dine at HoutHoop Seafood Restaurant, where chef Jackie crafts an unforgettable meal. We’ll end the day relaxing in their inviting accommodations after an adventure-packed day. (Dinner & Accom included)
Day 5
After Breakfast, (Included) we continue north to visit the coastal towns of Kleinsee and Port Nolloth before reaching the border town of Alexander Bay, marking the northernmost point of our journey. These towns originated from the diamond mining boom, with Alexander Bay being one of the most prominent diamond mining hubs on the African coast. After visiting Alexander Bay, we return south to Port Nolloth for a seaside lunch. (Included)
Our day ends with a stay at The Okiep Country Hotel, a gem known for its rustic charm and renowned lamb neck dinners. This historic hotel, with its 44 cozy ensuite rooms, bar, and welcoming restaurant, is the perfect place to unwind for the next two nights. (Dinner & Accom included)
Day 6
Following a breakfast buffet at the Okiep Country Hotel, we embark on a Richtersveld 4x4 excursion, an unforgettable journey into the arid but breath-taking Richtersveld landscape. Our first stop is Eksteensfontein, a Nama community established during the apartheid era as part of a resettlement program. This small town holds a significant cultural history, providing a glimpse into the resilience and heritage of the Nama people.
After Eksteensfontein, we head toward Vioolsdrift, passing through the Nababiep National Park and traversing Hell’s Pass. This area, marked by ancient volcanic rock formations, offers some of the most striking views on the route. We pause for a light lunch at one of the many lodges along the Orange River, then return to Okiep for our final night’s stay, sharing a buffet dinner and reflecting on our experiences of the past six days.
Day 7
We enjoy a final breakfast together before bidding each other farewell but not before Alan takes you on one last journey into the past. We visit the worlds once richest Copper Mine, right on the doorstep of the Iconic Okiep Country Hotel. We visit the World Heritage site of the Cornish Beam Pump and Smokestack and round off the tour with a visit to the Copper Museum on the premises of the Hotel (Free Tour)

This is a tour where we’ll enjoy seafood and more seafood. If you’re allergic to seafood, please let us know so we can arrange alternative meals for you.
Things to bring:
* A tire pump and pressure gauge.
* Something to store your road snacks, a small 12v fridge is handy.
* A flashlight, tow rope, and make sure your 4x4 has a hook in both the front and back—just in case
* A towel for each person and toilet paper, just in-case.
* A camp chair for yourself and your partner.
We’re using a variety of accommodations and dining options along the West Coast. In remote areas, a little patience is needed. Please note, due to the nature of the area, we reserve the right to make last-minute changes to accommodation and restaurant options.
