This Privacy Policy describes how Weird and Near (“the app,” “we,” “us”) handles information when you use our mobile application. The app helps you explore map-based reports of bigfoot sightings, UFO reports, fossil occurrences, haunted locations, and related points of interest near a location you choose.
SUMMARY
• We do not require an account or collect your name or email inside the app.
• We do not sell your personal information.
• The app uses device location (with your permission) to center searches and show distance.
• The app uses the internet for maps, optional live fossil data, and place search.
• Most sighting databases are bundled in the app; fossil data may be fetched from a public third-party API.
INFORMATION THE APP USES
Location
If you allow location access, the app reads your device’s GPS coordinates to set or update your search area, show your position on the map, and calculate distances to nearby points. Location data is used on your device to power app features. We do not operate a server that stores your location history tied to your identity.
You can deny location permission and still use the app by searching for a place or tapping the map to choose an area.
Map and network data
When you use the app, your device may contact third-party services over the internet, including:
• OpenStreetMap — map tiles and display
• OpenStreetMap Nominatim — place name search (when you search for a location)
• Paleobiology Database (PBDB) — fossil occurrence data when the Fossils layer is enabled
• External websites — for example, official UFO report pages linked from individual sightings
Those services receive technical data typical of web requests (such as IP address, user agent, and query parameters). Their use is governed by their own privacy policies.
Bundled and local data
Bigfoot, UFO, and haunted-house datasets included in the app are stored on your device as part of the installation. The app filters and displays this data locally based on your chosen search center and radius. We do not upload your personal profile or contact list.
Data we do not collect in the app
• No user accounts or registration
• No in-app collection of email, phone number, or mailing address
• No intentional collection of children’s personal information (the app is not directed at children under 13)
HOW INFORMATION IS SHARED
We do not sell or rent your personal information. Information leaves your device only as needed for the third-party services listed above (maps, search, fossil API, and links you choose to open).
DATA RETENTION
The app may store preferences (such as layer toggles and search settings) on your device. We do not maintain a central database of your activity. Uninstalling the app removes locally stored app data from your device.
SECURITY
We take reasonable steps to build the app securely, but no method of transmission or storage is 100% secure. Use the app at your own discretion on networks you trust.
YOUR CHOICES
• Grant or revoke location permission in your device settings
• Disable layers you do not want to use
• Use place search or map tap instead of GPS
• Uninstall the app at any time

Weird and Near is provided for entertainment and exploration. Sighting reports come from public or third-party sources and are not verified by us. Fossil information is educational and not professional geological advice. Links open external sites we do not control.
CHANGES TO THIS POLICY
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. The “Last updated” date at the top will change when we do. Continued use of the app after changes means you accept the updated policy.
