I never really imagined us making a live record, but we've always had an open policy of letting people tape our shows. Personally, I'd rather have extensive dental work before listening to tapes of live Ween... you have these great memories of these great shows, and then you hear the playback and more times than not you absolutely suck, you're completely out of tune, or the tape just sounds crappy. This isn't ALWAYS the case, and it took the Ween live tape / cdr/ mp3 trading on the web to get going before we got the idea to compile this album. We figured that since you guys were interested in this stuff anyway, we'd give you some music that we're kinda proud of. This record was originally going to be released exclusively through our website, a limited edition of a few thousand - but when we submitted the tapes to Elektra for their approval they felt that it was something they wanted to add to their catalog - so here we are... "Paintin' The Town Brown", Ween's first live album. Hopefully it'll be the first in a series. We changed the concept of this record about 3 times before deciding to make it a compilation from the last 9 years of touring. From our earliest days performing as a duo (accompanied only by a cassette deck) to the now legendary "12 Golden Country Greats" tour (featuring some of Nashville's baddest players) it's all on here, and it sounds pretty good we think. This whole record was transferred directly from cassettes, many of which were on the floor of my car at some point or another, but we've gotten it to sound pretty respectable. (Ween have always been synonymous with high fidelity sound) We have a lot of really great memories (and sometimes no recollections whatsoever) that go along with the songs on this album, it sorta feels like a photo album when we hear it - I feel like a rock critic writing about it... but hopefully the good times that we had playing this music will translate over to you.
