Easter at St George's

Yesterday, we all got together outside on the playground for a socially-distanced Easter Service. It was the first time the whole school has gathered for over a year and it was a wonderful occasion. In a carefully choreographed and planned service, the Class Four children told the Easter story, interspersed with songs from each year group. The sun shone, the children spoke and sang beautifully and everyone had a smile on their face. One child was heard commenting, "Wow, there's a lot of children, I forgot there were so many!". The children all waved at each other before the service began and enjoyed hearing each other sing. We also used the Collective Worship dice for the Greeting and Sending Out - the first time they have been used for over a year. It was also the first time the Class One children had attended a collective worship; they sat very well and we all enjoyed their lovely song about Jesus arriving in Jerusalem, complete with palm leaves. Here are some photos of our service.

The children were all given a palm cross, made by St George's church. Every child has made an Easter Egg prayer too - these are hanging in the trees in Church Meadow if you would like to take a look.

Over the course of the week, the children have watched and participated in three Collective Worships in the classroom, based around the Easter story. They have also been learning about it in their RE lessons.

St George's Yeti

At the start of term, during lockdown, I set the children the challenge of designing a new St George's Yeti. Ella-Rose in Class One was the winner of the competition and she has been waiting for her prize ever since!

It finally arrived in the post today......... I hope you'll agree it was worth the wait!

We also have a Yeti to keep in school and she has been introduced to all the children.

Comic Relief

Well done to everyone for getting into the spirit of Red Nose Day! The children (and parents) were greeted by a very colourful Mr Stacey on the gate and it was great to see all the children joining in with the red dressing up theme.

Thank you for all the contributions; we raised £122 for Comic Relief.

Parent Governor Recruitment

Earlier this week, you received an email from me with information regarding Parent Governor recruitment. We have two vacancies for Parent Governors on our Governing Body and we would really like to fill them! Please read the information in the email carefully and consider putting yourself forward for the role. It is not a huge time commitment and it really is a worthwhile experience.

Parliamentary Review

Today, your child will be bringing home a complementary copy of the Parliamentary Review publication. St George's features in this publication and so we have been given several copies to distribute to our school community.

As stated in the letter accompanying the publication, I am very keen to make it clear that we did not pay a fee to feature. I am very proud to see our wonderful school in such a prestigious publication and to have been given the opportunity to share our values and ethos with the wider educational community.

Aeneas and the Monster

I am lucky enough to see lots of lovely pieces of work from the children every week and it is always a pleasure to see the pride in their faces when they are asked to come and share their work with me. This week, I read a very accomplished piece of writing by Charlie in Class 4 and I wanted to share an extract with you; it really is of a very high standard and will hopefully provide some inspiration to our younger pupils!

This section is written from the point of view of Aeneas, hero of Greek mythology:

I gasped as from the vast cavern, that was littered with bodies, emerged a misshapen brute with ten serpentine heads. Each had a pair of blood-red eyes which seemed to stare into my soul. It roared with the sound of a thousand nightmares, revealing three rows of inch-long, razor sharp teeth that were serrated like huge steak knives. As I whimpered, all ten heads turned towards me and unleashed its flaming breath, that spewed jets of fire like a volcano spews ash and lava. It had immense claws that were stained with dried, flaking blood and a flexible, whip-think tail that was covered in barbed hooks of jagged bone which could rip through flesh without effort. Its human-like torso was covered in sickly green scales.
