WebNotes ("the Extension") is a browser extension that helps users capture selected text from webpages and organize it into research notes.
This Privacy Policy explains what information WebNotes processes, how it is used, where it is stored, and whether it is shared.
WebNotes processes information only when the user chooses to use the Extension's features.
Depending on how the Extension is used, this may include:
Text that the user explicitly selects on a webpage and chooses to add to a note.
Text that the user manually enters into a note.
Text that the user manually pastes into the Extension, such as copied text from a PDF.
Limited webpage information associated with a captured selection, such as the webpage title, hostname, source type, and capture timestamp.
User-created note names, note organization, colors, and other information required to manage saved notes.
The content captured by the user may potentially contain personal, confidential, or sensitive information. WebNotes does not intentionally seek or collect such information independently; it is processed only when the user chooses to capture or enter it.
The information processed by WebNotes is used only to provide the Extension's user-facing functionality, including:
Capturing selected webpage text into a note.
Displaying and organizing captured text.
Allowing users to edit, reorder, search, save, rename, and delete notes.
Maintaining locally saved note history.
Copying notes to the user's clipboard when requested.
Exporting notes as plain text or Microsoft Word (.docx) files when requested.
WebNotes does not use captured information for advertising, behavioral profiling, credit evaluation, or unrelated purposes.
WebNotes is designed as a local-first extension.
Captured notes and related information are stored locally in the user's browser using Chrome's local extension storage (chrome.storage.local).
WebNotes does not upload captured notes, webpage text, or saved note history to servers operated by the developer.
WebNotes does not use cloud synchronization or a developer-operated database for storing user notes.
WebNotes does not sell, rent, or share captured user data with third parties.
WebNotes does not use third-party advertising, analytics, tracking, or user-profiling services.
The developer does not receive or have routine access to the text captured by users.
When a user chooses to export or copy information, the resulting data is provided directly to the user through the browser's normal local functionality. The user is responsible for deciding where exported or copied information is subsequently stored or shared.
WebNotes requires access to webpages because its primary functionality is to allow users to select text on webpages and add that content to their notes.
The Extension's webpage access is used to provide this user-facing capture functionality. WebNotes does not use webpage access to monitor browsing activity for advertising, analytics, profiling, or other unrelated purposes.
The storage permission is used to save active notes and saved note history locally in the browser.
The sidePanel permission is used to provide the WebNotes note-taking interface in Chrome's side panel.
WebNotes uses webpage content-script access on HTTP and HTTPS webpages so users can select text and capture it into their notes.
This access is required for the Extension's primary functionality and is not used for advertising, tracking, or unrelated data collection.
Users control what information WebNotes captures.
Users can:
Choose whether to capture selected webpage text.
Add their own notes.
Edit captured content.
Reorder note sections.
Delete individual sections.
Delete saved notes.
Clear their locally stored WebNotes data.
Copy notes to the clipboard.
Export notes as .txt or .docx files.
WebNotes does not automatically upload or transmit captured notes to the developer.
Because WebNotes stores data locally in the user's browser and does not transmit captured notes to developer-operated servers, there is no developer-operated cloud database containing users' notes.
Users should nevertheless avoid intentionally capturing or exporting confidential information when they do not have authorization to do so.
Captured notes remain in the browser's local WebNotes storage until the user edits or deletes them, clears the Extension's stored data, or removes the Extension.
Exported files are controlled by the user and are no longer managed by WebNotes once saved outside the Extension.
WebNotes is not specifically directed toward children under the age of 13.
WebNotes complies with the Chrome Web Store User Data Policy and Limited Use requirements.
User data accessed by WebNotes is used only to provide or improve the Extension's single purpose and user-facing functionality.
WebNotes does not sell user data, use user data for personalized advertising, or transfer user data to third parties except where required by applicable law or otherwise permitted by the Chrome Web Store User Data Policy.
WebNotes does not permit humans to routinely access or read users' captured content.
This Privacy Policy may be updated from time to time to reflect changes to WebNotes or applicable requirements.
The updated policy will be published at the same privacy policy URL.
