Captain Lovelace was an Air Force commander and space pioneer. Known in equal measure for her brilliant tactical mind, her maverick impulses and her acidic wit. Both a workaholic and an infamous prankster, Lovelace prided herself in both taking her business seriously and taking time to enjoy the finer things in life (also known as prodding over-serious sticks-in-the-mud).

Lovelace spent over two years on the U.S.S.Hephaestus with a crew of six (including herself) studying the star Wolf 359, 7,5 years away from Earth. The mission began as a deep space survey; however, it became a game of survival as crewmembers became infected with a deadly virus known as Decima. Having realized that command didn't care whether or not they made it home alive, they began to construct a makeshift escape pod by cannibalizing materials from the station, including one of the nuclear reactor engines.
Eventually, the only people remaining alive were Lovelace and Dr. Selberg, who was, unbeknownst to her, responsible for infecting the Decima victims. After leaving a warning message in the auxiliary systems of the ship, Lovelace was eventually able to escape. She turned on Hilbert once she realized that he was behind the Decima virus, knocking him unconscious and taking the makeshift ship. She put herself in cryosleep and flew off, apparently well-prepared for any number of contingencies. However she never reached Earth, and was presumed dead.
During the second Hephaestus mission, her shuttle returned to the ship, which was met with surprise and suspicion from the crew there. Throughout their time together, threats and saving each other's lifes, they grew closer. Close enough that Commander Minkowski offered her the place as Second in Command.
They later found out, Lovelace had died. Her shuttle fell into the star and she had been replaced by a duplicate by the "Dear Listeners", a race of hive-minded aliens that studied other species. This duplicate hadn't been aware, filled with the same memories and experiences as the original Lovelace had. Even after realizing her true nature, she decided to stay Lovelace, the one before everything went wrong.
