Description
Thespesia populnea is a tree that belongs to the mallow family, Malvaceae. It is native to the Old World tropics (possibly pantropics) but found on coasts around the world. It commonly grows on the tropical coastlines. It seeds can survive for months on sea.
It was the sources of bast fibers for the production of cordage and wood for Austronesian outrigger ships and carving. It may be planted for habitat restoration.
