The Wilkes Community Action Committee (WCAC), was founded as a private non-profit in 1965 to respond to the need for immediate support for families. Today the committee meets monthly to research ideas and plan fund raising events to support worthy projects that affect the lives of low-income people. The committee is to serve as a corporate umbrella for Community Action Groups, BROC Programs, BROC sponsored projects and such other general unincorporated community action groups as may be organized under the initial sponsorship of the Blue Ridge Opportunity Commission in Wilkes County.
WCAC participates in various fundraising events throughout the year such as: fashion shows, musical events, festival booths, raffles, online auctions, and so much more! The largest fundraising event taking place throughout the year is the Little Miss Princess, Jr Miss and Miss CAG pageant. Each year, contestants compete to raise money for low-income projects in Wilkes County. Contestants are sponsored by parents, friends, relatives, churches, or clubs, and they compete by doing fundraisers such as selling raffle tickets, holding bake sales, car washes, doughnut sales and yard sales. This pageant is a way for these contestants to give back to their community, to learn citizenship and the importance of helping others. The pageant is about inner beauty and being a shining light to those who are less fortunate. The contestant who raises the most will be revealed on the night of the pageant and crowned the winner of each category. All proceeds from the pageant will go directly to assist low-income families in Wilkes County.
Recruiting for the pageant begins in August, and the pageant takes place in July. For more information on the pageant or other fundraisers please see our contact information.
