Note that per our new contract which begins in 2017, an evaluation committee will be formed to review and update the evaluation system.
During the 2012-2013 school year, the School Committee and the WTA explored the mandated revisions to Educator Evaluation. 26 teacher volunteers throughout the district participated in the pilot. They worked through evaluation issues such as what constitutes acceptable evidence for meeting standards. The pilot participants served as a resource for the rest of the teachers as we phases in the initial parts of the new Educator Evaluation model. Information related to the evaluation system was documented on this website for teacher reference.
It was planned that during the 2013-2014 school year, WTA and administrators wouldl be developing contract language and District Determined Measures (DDMs). That language was not created and is currently a topic of discussion in May of 2016 now that educator ratings of low growth, moderate growth, or high growth are due to the State. Some educators felt that the intent of DDMs were not met appropriately in Wayland. DESE staff members, Ron Noble and Craig Waterman, met with Kori Rogers, Maureen Devlin, Michael O'Connor, Tricia O'Reilly, and Karyn Saxon to discuss this issue on Thursday, May 19. In the meantime, Jay Chandler met with District administration to discuss the issue. The DDM issue is an ongoing issue at this time.
The Evaluation language currently in our contract is outdated and will have to be updated in upcoming negotiations. Many school systems have simplified the process so that the time it takes doesn't trump the positive impact of the system. Also State evaluation parameters are about to change somewhat with respect to the new regulations due to ESSA (Every Student Succeeds Act) which was just passed. One new regulation will have to do with measuring impact on student learning for our students that fall into the categories of economically disadvantaged, historically underserved, and special needs/disabilities.
