The story begins with an officer being given the task to kill somebody they possess little to no information about. The victim was attempting to escape; however, since there's now way out, they now beg the officer to read them five stories from their book first. The officer accepts.Â
Although, once those five stories have been read, the officer's view changes. They allow their victim to live.
The play was written to be a commentary about immigration and class. Despite being a trusted officer, the officer is still being conditioned by the higher ups. Moreover, the officer is still human. The audience never finds out if the immigrant was actually a criminal. That symbolises how blindly orders can be followed, and how innocent people can take the blame for something they may have not done. There is a connection between the officer and the immigrant, implying how the officer is more similar to the immigrant than to their bosses. The five stories help the officer to reach that conclusion.
