Every other year Waukazoo host an Art Night. This is a night for family and friends to come to school and see all the art that your student is working on. Part of what the PTA helps with is the set up for the event. Decemeber 4th after school, the art teacher, Amy Tenbarge, needs parents to help her hang and set up all of the student's art. She also needs parents help during the event. This year Art Night is December 5th from 6:30 pm to 8 pm.
As a PTA we try to have two assemblies a year. One assembly occurs before the holiday recess and the other occurs either before or during March is reading month. As a volunteer, things that we would need help with would be step up, clean up, and any other needs that might arise the day of the event.
During our Fun Run Fundraiser, we need parent volunteers to come to school and count all of the money that is donated. We count by classrooms so that we can keep track of the running totals. We meet in the room across from the multipurpose room. The dates that we are meeting is Thursday, September 19th and Thursday, September 26th.
The PTA is in charge of a big bulletin board near the entryway of the school. Each month the board is changed and has a different theme to correlate with that particular month. Then, all of the students that have a birthday that month have their name on the bulletin board. Every year there is one person in charge of the birthday bulletin board. As a volunteer, you could either be in charge of the birthday board or help the person that is already in charge of the board. This is an opportunity to be involved in as much or as little as you'd prefer.
The book fair is held during March is Reading month every year. For the book fair we have a volunteer that coordinates with Scholastic and organizes the week long event. In order to have everything go well during the book fair, we still need volunteers available everyday to help assist the kids with picking out books, help with set up, help with closing each night, as well as helping take payments for book purchases. We need volunteers for during the school day and during the evening as well.
We collect box tops throughout the whole year. There are two times during the year that we submit our donated box tops. To encourage donations, we have a competition between classrooms to see who can submit the most. We have one volunteer who coordinates and any additional help can help with counting box tops, or planning the event for the winning classroom. (Box tops has changed it process of submitting box tops so how volunteers are needed will eventually be altered as well.)
Twice a year during parent/teacher conferences the PTA plans meals for the teachers while they are working extra long hours to meet with parents. There is a coordinator that plans what the meals look like and tries to get vendors to provide meals for free or discounted rates. Other volunteers are need to assist helping the coordinator as well as help with set up, clean up, and getting more volunteers to donate any additional supplies needed.
Field Day will be a new event this year so with anything new, we are not 100% what this will look like yet. It will be a 1 day event and will occur during school hours. Volunteers will be needed to help plan, organize, and execute field day. There will also most likely be a need for volunteers the day of the event to help it run smoothly and for everyone to have a lot of fun!
Fun Run is our ONLY fundraiser for the whole year. This is a two week long event where we raise money for the whole school year. We have a kick-off assembly, weekly money counts, and it all ends with a Fun Run at the high school track.
The library is run by volunteers. Teachers do not have a lot of time to take their students to the library. When they do have the time, we are there to help facilitate the check-in and check-out process. Volunteers also help students find books they are looking for as well as shelve books in between classes. There is a step by step guide of the process in the library. As a volunteer you can choose which days and for how long you are there to help. You can choose to help weekly, bi-weekly, or even once a month. We are just trying to help fill a void and make it easier on the teachers.
Every year for Patriot's Day (September 11th), the students will go out in front of the school and put flags up in front of the building. To help make the process run smoothly, we have parent volunteers come early the morning of the event and drill holes into the front lawn. Depending on the number of volunteers, it will take between 30 minutes to an hour. We do ask volunteers to bring their own cordless drill and the longest drill bit that they have.
On the first Friday of the month, November - May, the students have the opportunity to purchase popcorn to eat at school. In order to make sure the students get to partake in this event, we need parent volunteers to come in on those Friday mornings and pop the popcorn, place it in the bags, and then divide them up per classroom.
In February, during the student's lunch hour, there will be a special store called the Purple Power Store. All sales go toward the Van Andel Institute Purple Community. All the money will go toward biomedical research and science education. We would need parent volunteers to man the table to sell these items. Lunch runs from 11:35 am to 12:55 pm. For more information on the Purple Community, you can find it here.
The school store is open on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 11:35 am to 12:55 pm. The school store allows the students the opportunity to purchase items during their lunch time. Parents are need to help facilitate the sales during lunch. The school store is run by the student council so all purchases go directly back to the students.
This is a student council event that the students vote on each year. In the past, this has included a hot chocolate bar. Depending on what the students vote on, we will need parent volunteers to help run this event. The event will happen during the school day. More information will be posted when they become available.
During Spirit Week (September 9-13) there are a numerous amount of games put on for the students during recess. Volunteers are needed to help run these games and make them possible. This is a great time to come and see a small portion of the fun that will be had at school that week. Volunteers will be needed Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 11:30 am to 1 pm.
Every year to show our teachers how much we love and respect the work they do, we host a teacher appreciation week. This is a week long event that has previously included a breakfast, a gift, notes from the students, and a room serviced breakfast. Volunteers would be needed for planning, getting donations, decorating, set up, clean up, and any other needs that arise from the preparations for the week.
On November 11 there will be an assembly to honor and recognize the sacrifices not only of all Veterans but those of our Waukazoo families. This helps our students to understand the meaning of Veterans day and see that it even effects those close to us. Part of this program is displaying pictures in the hallways and we can always use an extra hand in helping us prepare for this event. Volunteering for this event could take place after school or in the morning before school.
As a PTA we know how much work goes into making all of the events of the year happen and because of this we want to celebrate those that have taken time out of their busy schedules to help the staff and students of Waukazoo. Every other year we host an event to thank those who have volunteered. This year we will be hosting a breakfast. Next year, we honor the volunteers with a thank you note and a small gift. This year we will need help for the planning, set up, and clean up. As a volunteer you can be in as involved as much or a little as works in your schedule.
Watch D.O.G.S. (Dads Of Great Students) is an innovative father involvement, educational initiative of the National Center for Fathering. The opportunity is open to an father figure (dad, grandpa, uncle, brother, etc.). The volunteer can commit to one day or one day a month, it is completely up to them. The volunteer will help with an extra set of eyes and ears to enhance security and reduce bullying. The volunteer with also help with odd jobs around the school and create lifelong memories. For even more information, click here.
Waukaboo is a safe, fun Halloween event where students get to dress up and hang out with their friends from school. Volunteers pass out candy (provided by the PTA) for the trick or treat portion from their decorated trunks. Volunteers are needed to help plan the event, provide decorated trunks for the trunk or treat, and for passing our cider and doughnuts.
Winter Olympics is a student council event that occurs during the students lunch recess time so in order to volunteer you would need to be available from 11:35 am - 12:50 pm. This event is very popular with the students and it cannot be successful without the help of parents like you. These events do occur outside so if you do volunteer, make sure you come prepared with the gear to keep you warm. There is one event each day that each grade level competes in. The event that day is the same for all grade levels, with minor adjustments for younger students.
Each year during December, the PTA hosts Winter Workshop. Winter Workshop is held during the school day, and parent volunteers are there to help the students make their holiday gifts. The parents do not need to have any crafting skills as the crafts will be put together by the students and easy enough for each grade level to be able to complete them. The parents are needed to help and keep order. This event is a parent favorite.
Teachers are always in need of extra hands to help them with easy tasks. They routinely leave these tasks in the office for whomever has the extra time to help them. If you are interested in doing some easy tasks to help out our teachers, select this on your volunteer interest form and the office staff will be in contact with you to let you know when there are things that need to be done. This will be a time flexible task and can work around your schedule.
