Chamber Music at St. James - April 25, 2019
The Watershed Ensemble is pleased to present our second concert of the 2018/2019 season. Join us on April 25 for a program of Louis Spohr's Nonet in F Major, Op. 31, Svervansky's Woodwind Quintet, and Kodaly's Intermezzo for String Trio.
Louis Spohr (1784-1859) wrote his Nonet for his financial supporter, Johann von Tost. The masterful Nonet has all the features of a late classical symphony, but scaled for nine players, allowing each individual musician to realize the expressive voice of their instrument. Hungarian composer Endre Szervánszky (1911-1977) lived under the oppressive Soviet regime, where composers were not allowed to delve into experimental, modern techniques. Szervánszky's Wind Quintet demonstrates how he was able to work within the restrictions imposed by the regime. Zoltan Kodály (1882-1967) was a renowned composer, music educator and ethnomusicologist. He collected countless folk songs in the Hungarian countryside, and his compositions are infused with them. His Intermezzo for String Trio is a serene late-Romantic work.
