Los Angeles - Los Angeles County Museum of Art

The Los Angeles County Museum of Art is a world-renowned art museum that has been open to the public since 1961. The museum houses over 120,000 square feet of space and more than 150 galleries. It features an extensive collection ranging from ancient Egyptian art to modern day American paintings. The LACMA also offers visitors the chance to explore different cultures through changing exhibitions on display in its many galleries throughout the year.

The LACMA was originally founded as an initiative to save the Los Angeles County Museum of History, Science and Art. It has since become a popular destination for art lovers in Southern California. It is located on Wilshire Boulevard near the La Brea Tar Pits and Hancock Park neighborhoods just east of Hollywood.

The museum is open to the public every day of the week except for Wednesdays. Admission is free to all visitors the second Tuesday of each month, but there are fees associated with most exhibitions and programs at LACMA.

In November 2011, a new $650 million dollar building was opened in order to house the collection that had been housed at the museum since its founding in 1961. This new space includes a state-of-the art auditorium, larger galleries and more.

While the current building houses the main collection of paintings, sculpture, drawings and decorative arts dating from ancient to modern time periods that have been collected over many decades by LACMA’s directors and curators, future plans include housing photography collections in the new building.

LACMA was ranked as one of the most popular art museums in North America and third most popular museum in the United States by TripAdvisor. In 2017, it was also named among Metacritic’s “Top Ten Art Museums on Earth.” In 2018, LACMA was ranked as the 26th most visited museum in the world.

Some famous exhibits previously at the museum include "Treasures of Tutankhamun", "Van Gogh and the Impressionists" and "Picasso: The Early Years". The museum was also featured in the film "A Beautiful Mind".

Famous LACMA museum benefactors include movie stars Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones.
